Ports You’ll Visit Along the Inside Passage with Princess Cruises

Alaska is a near-mythical state; one that seems to beckon the adventurous from its perch at the top of the northern hemisphere. The Last Frontier is more than a fable and bigger than a vacation daydream; it’s a land of exploration, ripe with memory-making experiences. Making the most of it typically involves a cruise (you’re welcome to attempt driving there, but … good luck); and few cruise lines are as renowned for their Alaska sailings as Princess Cruises. Here are some of the ports you can expect to visit with a seven-day sailing through the Inside Passage.

History comes to life at the storied port of Skagway.

Skagway

Formerly the gateway to Alaska’s gold rush, Skagway today makes for a dramatic setting — it’s a historic mining town nestled between the mountains and the water’s edge. Retrace the footsteps of the miners past in spirit with a scenic (and comfy) ride along the famed White Pass Route through the coastal mountains. Or, try your hand at panning for gold at the nearby Dredge Town. Strike out for the riches of the Great Outdoors with excursions kayaking, rock climbing, bicycling, rafting or horseback riding. However you choose to spend your time in port, you’ll be well-rewarded with priceless moments and memories.

Few places on Earth can compare to the untamed beauty of Glacier Bay National Park.

Glacier Bay National Park

Few scenes of the Last Frontier are as iconic as Glacier Bay National Park. The Margerie Glacier is an imposing figure, 21 miles wide and carving mountains from the Fairweather Mountain Range all the way to Glacier Bay. There’s a good chance you’ll hear a crack and then a boom as a massive chunk of ice calves from the glacier. As the ship passes by, you’ll want to have your binoculars ready — this is a prime location for sighting wildlife life such as migrating whales or brown bears.

A salmon bake can be a fun (and tasty) experience for all ages.

Ketchikan

Ketchikan sits where the sea meets a sea of trees, and as such, timber and salmon make up the core of the town’s claim to fame; you can expect both to play central roles in your visit here. Of the former, both the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show — where performers showcase their throwing, racing and chopping prowess in head-to-head competition — and the world’s oldest collection of indigenous totem poles at the Totem Pole Heritage Center are available as excursions for your time in port. Both show unique, yet contrasting, examples of how civilizations have approached the craft of timber. Additionally, as the salmon capital of the world, the waters are rich with fish. Whether your ideal means of experiencing it is fishing it up yourself or simply tasting the final product prepared by a skilled chef, you’ll have ample opportunity to appreciate the local salmon.

Of course, the ideal way to visit Alaska is on a cruise with Princess Cruises — but our travel advisors can take your trip to the next level. Not only will you have plenty of time to experience the sights and flavors listed above, but you’ll also enjoy everything that makes Princess Cruises a leading name in the industry — from the ultraluxe MedallionClass® experience to the made-from-scratch cuisine — on top of exclusive perks and amenities secured through our working relationship with them. Our agents know Princess Cruises well, so we can help you choose, plan and book your cruise vacation to perfection.
