Seasons and Festivals in Saudi

While the term “season” in much of the world elicits thoughts of weather patterns — like April showers, sunny summer days or a winter wonderland — seasons in Saudi are more like different ways to celebrate. Simply put, it’s the name given to a specific period that is unique for the celebrations across different locations. If you, the intrepid world traveler, were looking for a break from regular old seasons in favor of something more exciting, here are the three adventures you really can’t miss.

Don't miss the Art Promenade during Jeddah Season.

Jeddah Season

For 60 days a year (May through June), Saudi’s second-largest city erupts into a nonstop jubilee. Jeddah season sees the city transform into nine distinct entertainment zones, each sporting a unique theme. For example, Prince Majid Park takes on the spirit of a carnival, complete with a dancing fountain show. Or, take the Jeddah Pier, where the world’s greatest theme park seems to have sprouted right along the coast of the Red Sea — complete with rides that the whole family will love.

Jeddah season is also a wonderful time to soak up the city’s creative spirit: There are 20 concerts and four international exhibitions to attend. Pay a visit to Fashion Village, where a quick session with a stylist will have you living out your very own makeover montage. Or, walk an immersive runway where technology and art collide. Add in the live graffiti mural, the glitter art and the all-day-long DJ station and it’s safe to say you could fill a day exploring.

MDLBeast during the Riyadh season provides a playground for over 400,000 people over several days.

Riyadh Season — Beyond Imagination

By far the biggest event of the year, Riyadh season is a five-month-long festival from October to March filled with activities and experiences. Some events are ticketed and some are free. Some events are larger than life — like MDLBeast, which takes place in the heart of Riyadh as some 400,000 revelers partake and play at the world’s largest rave music event over the course of several days.

Thrill-seekers should also take note of Diriyah season — just 20 minutes outside of Riyadh, several sporting events take place in November and December.

AlUla Season

Starting in January, it’s AlUla season. Trade gloomy winter weather for the vast grandeur of the Arabian desert: Heritage events intermingle with international music and dance, mass drone light shows blanket the landscape of historic dwellings and monuments while a 100-strong legion of hot air balloons promises to show you a whole new world … or at least, a whole new view of it.

The festivities don’t just stop at luxury tent hotels, market stalls selling fine wares and high-end restaurants. Two key events stand out on the itinerary: Azimuth takes place between sunrise and sunset, where art, live music, food and culture is bathed in golden hues. The other event is The Wellness Festival, which centers on, you guessed it, wellness. An array of wellness experts and practitioners come together to create restorative and holistic experiences focused on energizing your mind, body and soul.
