Viking’s West Indies Explorer
Get acquainted with romantic Old San Juan
PUERTO RICO
Get to know San Juan by arriving early or tacking on a few extra days after your cruise. Romantic Old San Juan will lure you onto its historic cobblestone streets with smells of grilled garlic shrimp wafting from open-air restaurants. The sultry air of this tropical island may entice you to try the legendary rum produced by local distillers Bacardi and Ron del Barrilito, then join salsa dancers enjoying the spicy nightlife.
BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
Dramatic rock formations, hidden coves and breathtaking vistas are hallmarks of the British Virgin Islands. Their story is told in Tortola’s colonial manors and museums which trace the island’s history from the early Arawak Indian settlers to the present. A daytrip to Virgin Gorda is a must. This tranquil haven named “Fat Virgin” by Christopher Columbus in 1493 features huge boulders set in cobalt waters along with secluded beaches carpeted by the world’s softest, whitest sand.
Magnificent Pitons in St. Lucia
LUCIA
Rising from Jalousie Bay are the UNESCO-listed Pitons, two magnificent volcanic spires measured at over 2,400 feet. Today, St. Lucia is a sovereign nation and part of the British Commonwealth, but it was so valued by the French and British that they battled over it for 150 years. In Soufrière, visitors of the Diamond Botanical Gardens stroll the grounds to observe the local flora. Or veer in the direction of St. Lucia’s premier chocolate maker at Howelton Estate. Take classes in chocolate production or simply enjoy the view of neighboring island Martinique while sampling the treats.
MAARTEN / ST. MARTIN
An island divided: St. Martin has been shared by France and Holland since 1648. On the Dutch side, St. Maarten is home to stunning Orient Beach, a glorious mile of white sand where you can soak up the sun all afternoon. Marigot is the quaint, romantic capital of the French St. Martin at just four streets wide. Give snorkeling a try and be rewarded with a colorful array of tropical fish and perhaps sea turtles while luxuriating in the tranquil turquoise water.
