Are You Kidding Me?

Children can be a lot of fun at weddings, but sitting still and being quiet for long periods can be difficult. If you’ve decided to invite little ones, be clear on the save-the-date card or invitation with a simple “children welcome” message. Then you can move on to keeping them entertained so their parents can slip off to the dance floor. Here are our top suggestions for accommodating children at your event.

Spoil the kids at your big day with donuts.

1. Kids' Meal

Your littlest guests will likely be unimpressed with crab puffs or caviar. Plan a simple kids’ menu of pasta, chicken strips, sliders and apple slices. Even the pickiest eaters can find something from this list of basics. Arrange for cups with lids and straws to help avoid spills. Spoil them a bit with comfort desserts like doughnuts, cupcakes or warm cookies. For an outdoor summer gathering, rent a Sno-Cone machine, sorbet cart, popsicle bar or ice cream stand and chill out!

2. Photo Booth

Guests of all ages love a photo booth! Suppliers usually provide a box of props, hats and accessories so everyone can ham it up for the camera. Children love playing dress-up and making silly faces and will probably make multiple trips to the booth. Send a copy of their photos to their parents along with your thank-you notes for a fun surprise.

Everyone loves a piñata!

3. Piñata

Find a themed piñata shaped like a giant wedding cake or heart and let the kids hack away after the wedding cake is served. Something about squarely hitting a piñata is quite satisfying for kids and kids at heart. Fill yours with candy, small toys, gift cards, bubbles, gum or keepsake keychains to give everyone a treat.

4. Lego Table

Set up a child-sized table with building blocks and task kids with constructing their dream house. Vendors who specialize in Lego rentals are usually booked for daytime birthday parties, so they’re likely to be free for an evening reception. You may be surprised to see adults find their way over to the construction zone to relive their building days.

Consider getting the kids together for movie time while the adults dance the night away.

5. Movie Night

Ask your venue for a comfortable meeting room where parents can take their children if they need a bit of time away from all the excitement. Add a TV and DVD player so parents can pop in a fan favorite film to calm the troops. Teens would appreciate having a video game system with multiplayer classics like Dance Revolution, Rock Band or Guitar Hero.
