HOW TO: Build Your Registry
Once you’re engaged, it’s time to start thinking about your wedding registry. Here are some tips to get you started:
- Involve your partner. The registry should be a fun task you and your partner share. Chat openly about your expectations and assess your needs and wants together before jumping into it.
- Keep it simple. Stick to two or three stores you truly love. National chains like Target or Crate & Barrel and online retailers like Amazon offer a range of items to cover everything you’d need.
- Include options. As a rule, you should register for more gifts than there are guests to provide enough options to choose from. Include a range of items at different price points and avoid including too many expensive sets; split some of those up into individual items instead.
- Set up a honeymoon registry. Including a fund for honeymoon experiences (like a beachfront massage or fancy dinner) is a polite way to give guests the option of a monetary gift while also including them in the excitement of your honeymoon plans.
- Start early. This is a fun process you share with your partner, so don’t rush it! Build your list early to give guests time to make their purchases, and to give options for your engagement or bridal shower.

- To tweet, or not to tweet? Nobody said you have to have a social media presence at your wedding. Whether you want to be connected or unplugged, you can communicate your wishes to your guests with a cute DIY sign.
- If you want to be connected, choose a wedding hashtag and start using it right away. This will encourage your guests to use it, too. Plus, it will help catalog your experience from engagement to tying the knot and everything in between.
- If you use Pinterest to plan your wedding, maintain the element of surprise and make your wedding board private. It will help you avoid unsolicited advice about your plans and make a bigger impression on your guests on the actual wedding day.
- Pass the buck. No, seriously! You have enough to do on your wedding day, so hand over your Facebook or Instagram account to a trusted bridesmaid for the evening so you can be present in the moment.

HOW TO: Create a Wedding Website
Once you’ve built your wedding registry, the next step is to create a website. Here’s how.
- Collect all the details. Before you sit down at the computer, make sure you have all the details handy. You’ll need the exact venue address, travel details, registry links and digital copies of your favorite engagement photos, plus any other photos together over the years.
- Pick a website host. There are lots of free sites that host wedding websites. Some of our favorites are theknot.com, minted.com and zola.com.
- Choose your template. Don’t worry! You don’t need to be a tech whiz to make a website. Choose from dozens of beautiful, pre-designed templates and simply fill out the details.
- Be thorough. To avoid fielding the same questions over and over, include absolutely everything your guests might want to know, like the schedule of events, travel directions, things to do in the destination, RSVP details, registry links, photos and even the story of how you met.
- Share the URL. Once your website is published, share the URL on your save-the-date announcements. That’s it!
