The Two Towers
In a city as vertically resplendent as Tokyo, you should begin your exploration high up at one of its many observation decks. At Tokyo Tower — the world's tallest, self-supported steel tower — you’ll find sweeping views of the city from 819 feet high, even spotting Mount Fuji on a clear day. Intrepid visitors test their mettle at the Skywalk Windows here, a series of glass floor panels that allow you to peer 490 feet straight down.
Tokyo Tower is home to the third-highest observation deck in the city — numbers one and two on that list belong to the Tokyo Skytree. The tallest structure in Japan, the Skytree provides sweeping, 360-degree views from both 1,150 and 1,480 feet. The higher of the two, known as the Tembo Galleria, is home to the world's highest skywalk, which leads visitors up through a sloping spiral ramp that gains altitude as it circles the tower.

Any visit to Japan should include multiple visits to temples and shrines to appreciate the country’s spiritual side. In Tokyo, there’s none better to visit than Sensoji Temple, the city’s oldest. Completed in 645, this massive Buddhist temple is the heart of Edo culture. You’ll enter through the Kaminarimon, or Thunder Gate, and pass through a parade of stalls selling souvenirs and snacks before reaching the temple's second gate, the Hozomon. Be sure to sample the tempting rice cakes and green-tea-flavored treats sold along this ancient shopping street. Once inside, you’ll find a five-story pagoda as well as the Asakusa Shrine, one of the most famous Shinto shrines in the city.

No visit to Tokyo can be complete without an expedition to nearby Mount Fuji. Radiating an air of both natural tranquility and unmovable mass, this active volcano has entranced all who’ve seen it for millennia. Making the nearly 100-mile pilgrimage out of the city to the mountain itself is a delight, as your train whisks you past the outer reaches of the massive city and through pastoral landscapes. One of the best ways to view the mountain is from Hakone, a stunning resort village built around natural hot springs. From here, Mount Fuji will be the idyllic backdrop of your cable car ascent on the Hakone Ropeway through the misty mountains, your boat ride across picturesque Lake Ashi and your stroll through the sculpture garden at the Hakone Open-Air Museum.
