Three Must-See Sites of Jerusalem

Nestled right between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, some would claim that Jerusalem is at the center of the world. By most historical records, it’s tough to argue: As one of the oldest cities in the world, it happens to serve as a holy city for Islam, Judaism and Christianity. There are more sights to see and history to discover here than you could hope to cover in one trip — here are three quintessential experiences to seek out for your first time in town.
Shrine of the Book
Historians and architecture buffs alike will love visiting the Shrine of the Book.

Shrine of the Book

Home of the fabled Dead Sea Scrolls, the Shrine of the Book is a peculiar structure. Looking like the top third of an onion, or maybe a melted white chocolate chip, the building is a masterclass in abstract modernism. The shrine (white building) itself is meant to represent the “Sons of Light,” while the adjacent black, basalt wall represents the “Sons of Darkness.” You can read about both inside, where space-age rooms and surreal sleek halls house the 981 ancient manuscripts discovered by a Bedouin teenager in 1946.

Delve into history with a descent into the Western Wall Tunnel.

Western Wall Tunnel

If you have even a passing awareness of Jerusalem, you’re probably aware of “the wall” (it’s technically four walls that connect to form the Kotel, but tomato-tomahto). But did you know about the wall’s tunnels? That’s right — when the Western Wall was built, the only way for the retaining wall to support itself was for at least half of its height to be underground. Today, history lovers will rejoice in the chance to marvel at the many subterranean wonders on display — Warren’s Gate, ancient waterworks and a trove of unearthed ancient coins and earthenware, just to name a few.

A stroll through the Machane Yehudah Market is a vibrant affair.

Machane Yehudah Market

Exploring a city as intricate and historic as Jerusalem is bound to work up an appetite; while plenty of tasty restaurants are present all throughout the city, consider visiting the Machane Yehudah Market instead. Often referred to as “The Shuk,” this market is home to over 250 vendors, selling wares as varied as fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, fish, meats and cheeses, wines and liquors, nuts, seeds and spices as well as plenty of possible souvenirs in the form of housewares and textiles. Sampling delectable dishes while strolling through the colorful stalls makes for an enchanting afternoon.
