GREECE: OFF THE BEATEN PATH

From island hopping across the Greek Isles and visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites to discovering the unique side of popular destinations like Athens and Mykonos, our partner agency in Greece reveals some of the country’s most unique experiences. Which island is best for windsurfers? Where can you still see ancient ruts made by chariot wheels? Where's the best place in Athens to have dinner? Read on to find out.

The wonderful country of Greece — land to stunning ancient ruins, superb classic dining and idyllic island oases — is welcoming American travelers 5 years or older as long as you provide proof of full vaccination at least 14 days prior to travel, or a negative PCR test no older than 72 hours, or a negative rapid or self-test no older than 24 hours. Once you’ve arrived, consider embarking on these exceptional adventures to truly set your journey apart.

Island Hopping

Along with the well-known Greek Islands of Santorini , Mykonos, Crete and Paros, some of the best places to visit are off-the-beaten-track island destinations such as Naxos, Milos and Corfu. On Naxos — the largest, highest and greenest island in the Cyclades — you’ll find secluded villages where locals still wear traditional dress and live off the fruits of the land, as well as beautiful old churches, monasteries and Venetian castles, all coexisting harmoniously with local cubic houses built in the Cycladic style. Adventure seekers should head to Orkos Beach, where windsurfers and kitesurfers enjoy the steady meltémi winds, and foodies should look out for traditional products like sweet, buttery Naxos Graviera cheese.

Those looking for stunning settings will love Milos, where volcanic activity in ancient years endowed the island with lunar-like landscapes overlooking beautiful sandy white beaches. The surreal beach at Sarakiniko is especially popular for its white volcanic rock formations. Corfu, on the other hand, is known for its aristocratic past, making it one of the most intriguing islands in Greece. From its links with mythological characters to being home to European royalty, the location’s cultural heritage under Venetian, French and British rule can be seen in the intriguing architecture in Corfu Town.

UNESCO Hopping

For those who prefer history and culture to island beaches, the country’s 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites will definitely delight. While the most famous UNESCO site may be the Acropolis, a number of significant ancient sites are located just a few hours from Athens, making for perfect day trips that will give you the chance to discover the grand temples and breathtaking nature beyond the capital. We’re talking about places like Delphi, the most important oracle in Ancient Greece, and Mycenae, where you can ascend to the citadel through the famous Lion Gate and see the ruts made by ancient chariot wheels.

Further away you’ll find more inspiring sites. On Crete, explore the Palace of Knossos, one of the major must-see archaeological sites in Greece where you’ll get a rare glimpse into Minoan civilization. Or venture to the island of Delos near Mykonos to hike around the remains of the Temples of Apollo, the sanctuary of Artemis, the ancient theatre and the celebrated lion statues.

In Athens, we can set up a private tour of the new Acropolis Museum followed by an exclusive dinner on the museum terrace with mythological views of the Acropolis. Or head to the Stadium — the historic site of the 1st Olympic Games — where you and a small group of friends can “compete” with each other during track events, jumping or throwing competitions to better feel the dynamic sporting pulse that radiates this ancient landmark. Outside of Athens, we can create more magical moments, like a wine tasting event on the beaches of Mykonos or a guided tour up the 999 steps of the Akronafplia fortress, the oldest of Nafplio’s three castles.
