Three RIU resorts in Mexico have entered a new era, with redesigned rooms, new dining concepts and upgraded experiences for families and adults. From Riviera Nayarit to Cancun and Playa del Carmen, here’s what travelers can expect.
A New Look for RIU in Mexico
A favorite resort can feel completely different after the right renovation. Across Mexico, RIU Hotels & Resorts has been updating its properties with new designs, new room categories, expanded dining and experiences created for different types of travelers. Three resorts stand out in 2026: Riu Flamingos in Riviera Nayarit, Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun and Riu Palace Mexico in Playa del Carmen. Each has undergone a major transformation, but each offers a different way to experience Mexico.
Bring the whole family together for some fun in the sun.
Riu Flamingos: More Room for the Whole Family
The former Riu Jalisco has a new name and a completely refreshed identity. Following an extensive renovation, the Riviera Nayarit property is now Riu Flamingos, with modern spaces designed to make better use of natural light and create more room for families.
The resort added 120 rooms, upping the total number to 820. New family-room options can sleep up to six guests, making it easier for larger groups to stay together. Dining has also expanded with the American Country restaurant and Candy ice cream parlor, while existing buffet areas got a refresh.

Riu Palace Peninsula: A Fresh Take on Cancún
In Cancún, Riu Palace Peninsula reopened this summer following a renovation of all 618 rooms and its common areas. The redesign introduces lighter, more open interiors while keeping the resort’s recognizable exterior and beachfront setting. Food and drink are a major part of the update. Guests can choose from specialty restaurants including Krystal, Sakura, Agave, Duomo and the Steakhouse, plus the new American Country concept, Pepe’s Food, Tiki Taco and Gelati ice cream parlor.
The renovated resort also features six pools and an updated Renova Spa. One of the biggest additions is Elite Club by RIU. The premium adults-only experience sits within the family-friendly resort and gives eligible guests access to exclusive spaces and services.

Riu Palace Mexico: An Adults-Only Chapter Begins
Riu Palace Mexico is scheduled to reopen in September following a complete renovation of its rooms and common areas, this time as an adults-only resort.
The refreshed property will introduce Elite Club by RIU with premium room categories, a private pool and an exclusive restaurant. Guests can also expect a new spa and sports bar, along with Elite Club swim-up Junior Suite options.
Its location in Playacar keeps guests close to Playa del Carmen while offering a resort experience designed entirely around adults. For couples, groups of friends or travelers planning an adults-only getaway, the renovation gives one of RIU’s established Riviera Maya properties a different identity.
