CRUISING THE COAST OF ALASKA

Travel advisor Diane M. talks about her adventure sailing around the awe-inspiring coast of Alaska with UnCruise Adventures, an award-winning small boat cruise line built for adventure. Read on to hear about the sights, sounds and flavors she discovered during this unforgettable expedition cruise.
[Travel note: Alaska is currently open, with no passport or COVID testing required for American travelers. At this time, no large cruise ships are allowed in Alaska for the summer, but you can still experience the grandeur and natural beauty of the Last Frontier through smaller cruise companies — like UnCruise below — or through personalized tours.]

Alaska has always intrigued me. Where else can you see massive glaciers towering overhead and sprawling forests teeming with wildlife you only see in zoos? Add in the thrilling adventures, historic cultures and bold cuisine, and you have my idea of an ideal vacation spot.

Un-Cruise Adventures

Many cruise lines visit Alaska, but due to current safety regulations, only smaller ships are currently allowed to visit. My adventure-seeking friend and I wanted a unique experience in Alaska, one that took us up close to the glaciers and wildlife in a way that larger cruise lines cannot. That’s how we happily ended up with UnCruise Adventures.

UnCruise is a small-ship expedition cruise line that’s all about adventure and appreciating the local cultures. And since there was only 86 total guests onboard, we never felt crowded.

We had so many unforgettable adventures during our cruise. We did lots of hiking, kayaking, zodiac tours, shore walks and bear and whale watching. The ship offered yoga when there was downtime, and the staff was always around at dinner to talk about the day. Being in a kayak and seeing whales blowing not so far away is truly something to see! We even took a polar plunge into glacial Alaskan waters that really woke us up!

Epic views on an Alaskan cruise

I loved that UnCruise was able to be flexible. Each day’s activities took advantage of the current conditions and opportunities. We could be kayaking one morning and taking the inflatable skiffs out to a seal colony the next. Or another day may offer a leisurely afternoon shore walk or a rigorous mountain hike.

Since it was a small ship, the captain stopped the boat whenever we saw whales or bears. It was amazing to be out in the wilderness and see Alaska without the crowds. That’s the beauty of small-ship cruising — it’s so homey and casual. It’s not a cruise to sit back and relax. When the ship docks, everyone gets off to go exploring. Alaska has so much to explore, and offers so many grand adventures. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Let our expert Alaska advisors help you plan your perfect small ship adventure.
