Fun, Sun & Safety: How Theme Parks Are Protecting Guests & Staff

Massive, spiraling rollercoasters. Imaginative sets from your favorite movies. Colossal water parks filled with twisting slides. Instagram-worthy photos meeting TV and movie characters. Dazzling entertainment and parades filled with magic. Theme parks are awesome for a ton of reasons … awesome and safe. Let’s take a look at how two major theme parks are keeping their guests happy and healthy.

Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort’s new operational guidelines put the safety of guests and staff first. But don’t worry, it’s still the Universal you know and love! There are even some technological enhancements to make your visit even better. They encourage all guests to follow CDC guidelines and local directives to wear face coverings, regardless of vaccination status, while indoors. Face coverings are optional while outdoors.

Within the resort, you’ll find hand sanitizer stations in all public areas and elevator landings. There are also enhanced cleaning protocols for all guest rooms, meeting rooms and public areas with an EPA-approved cleaner and disinfectant. All guest rooms will be serviced after checkout. In the park, you can board rides, visit restaurants and see your favorite characters knowing that all high-touch areas are frequently sanitized for your safety.

Contactless options within the Universal Orlando Resort App will make your visit a breeze! Even before you arrive, you can purchase and store your park tickets right on your phone. In the park, the Virtual Line experience means you can explore the park AND wait for your next ride at the same time! Just pick your ride in the app, join the queue and show up during your time window. You’ll be whizzing around on your favorite ride in no time! Feeling hungry? On your way to the restaurant, jump on the app to select your dining location, peruse the menu, make your selections, pay for your meal and let the kitchen know you’re ready to eat when you arrive at the venue. During your stay, you’ll also enjoy several other contactless experiences, including hotel texting services, express checkout, contactless room service, interactive park maps and more!

Appropriate face coverings are required at Walt Disney World Resort

Walt Disney World
® Resort

To step up to the challenges of these modern times, aspects of a Disney theme park day have been re-examined in light of the new global environment, with new policies following guidance from health experts and government agencies. Along with reduced capacity across resorts and theme parks, giving you more space to be physically distant from other visitors, new safety procedures and technology usage to minimize contact with include:

  • Appropriate Face Coverings – As of August 2021, Disney requires all guests, regardless of vaccination status, to wear face coverings in indoor locations at Walt Disney World® Resort in Florida and the Disneyland® Resort in California. Children under the age of two are exempt from this rule.
  • Physical Distancing and Capacity Measures – To maintain appropriate physical distancing, a limited number of guests will be able to visit each theme park each day; limits will also be in place for indoor locations within the parks, such as retail shops and dining locations.
  • Cleanliness – As part of our ongoing commitment to the health and safety of our Guests, Cast Members and the larger community, we have high standards for general cleanliness and sanitation and employ robust cleaning procedures, such as:
    • Training for Cast Members, with ongoing reinforcement on a regular basis
    • Easy access to handwashing facilities and hand sanitizer dispensers
    • Quick response to spills, trash and other situations
    • End of day sanitation procedures for restroom, kitchen, and other facilities
  • Cashless Transactions – Guests are encouraged to use cashless options whenever possible, including MagicBands, debit cards, credit cards, Disney gift cards and mobile payment methods.
  • Mobile Order – Using the My Disney Experience app, guests can browse menus for most quick-service theme park restaurants, order ahead from wherever they are in the park and pick an arrival time that fits their schedule.

Even with all these changes, Walt Disney World® Resort will still be a magical place. Stories will come to life through attractions and beloved characters, and cast members have carefully prepared for their roles. The smile on your kids’ faces may be obscured by their face coverings, but they will be smiling all the same.
