More Than Just a Port

Some of the best parts of a cruise happen before the ship sets sail or after it docks for the last time. Victoria, Vancouver and the Caribbean all have something worth lingering over. If you've ever rushed through a port and wondered what you missed, keep reading.

Taking in the views from the Malahat Sky Walk

Victoria, BC: Beyond the Port Stop

Victoria tends to surprise people. It's often treated as a quick evening call on Alaska itineraries, a few hours ashore before the ship moves on. But Condé Nast Traveler named it the #1 Best Small City in the World three years in a row, and that kind of recognition doesn't come from a two-hour visit.

The city is walkable and concentrated around its Inner Harbour, which makes it easy to cover even with limited time. Evening arrivals are worth leaving the ship for— the waterfront lights up, local restaurants and pubs fill with people and the harbour itself has a particular energy that makes for a strong first impression.

With two or three extra days, the picture changes completely. The Butchart Gardens is one of those places that genuinely earns its reputation and the Malahat SkyWalk offers views of the Saanich Inlet that don't have a comparable alternative in the region. Whale watching out of Victoria is world-class, with operators running year-round trips to see orcas, humpbacks and grey whales.

For travelers who want to go deeper:

  • Songhees Tours offers Indigenous cultural experiences rooted in the history of the land the city sits on
  • Off the Eaten Track runs culinary tours through Victoria's food scene
  • Local wineries and cideries in the Saanich Peninsula are a short drive from downtown

The city also does afternoon tea properly, if that matters to you.

Biking along the Stanley Park Seawall

Vancouver, BC: The Destination Before the Destination

Many Alaska cruises start or end in Vancouver, and most travelers treat it as a logistics stop. That's a significant miss. Canada Place, where ships dock, sits in the middle of a working waterfront city with mountains visible from the terminal. You can step off the ship and be in one of the more distinctive urban environments in North America within minutes.

The city is characterized by how quickly the urban and natural run into each other. You can walk the Stanley Park Seawall along the ocean, visit Granville Island for lunch and take a gondola up Grouse Mountain before dinner, all in the same day. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is 15 minutes from downtown. Harbour Air runs scenic seaplane flights over the city and surrounding inlets. FlyOver Canada is worth an hour if you've never been.

For food, Vancouver has Michelin Guide recognition and a serious restaurant culture built around Pacific seafood and the range of cuisines that come with one of the most diverse cities in the country. The best neighborhoods to eat and move through are Gastown, Yaletown, Coal Harbour and Mount Pleasant.

Three to four nights is the sweet spot for exploring the city properly. Anderson Vacations offers a 3-Day Vancouver City Stay package that covers the main experiences. Destination Vancouver also has a dedicated Pre/Post Cruise itinerary built specifically for travelers arriving or departing by ship.

Hotels within easy reach of Canada Place include the Fairmont Pacific Rim, the Fairmont Waterfront and the Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown.

Swimming in a Cenote in Tulum

The Caribbean: Ports Worth the Extra Days

The Mexican Caribbean is one of the most-visited cruise regions in the world, which means it's also one of the most underestimated. Cozumel is famous for good reason. Palancar Reef is among the top dive and snorkel sites in the Western Hemisphere, and the water clarity there is something you notice immediately. Costa Maya and the port at Mahahual open access to Bacalar Lagoon, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and quieter beach stretches along the Riviera Maya.

Travelers who extend their stay before or after a Caribbean cruise have options that most port schedules can't accommodate: cenotes outside Tulum, the ruins at Chichén Itzá, slower days in smaller towns away from the resort corridor.

Puerto Rico offers a different type of extension; San Juan is one of the most historically layered port cities in the Caribbean, and an afternoon barely covers the surface. Old San Juan, El Morro and El Yunque National Forest each warrant their own day. Puerto Rico also functions well as a standalone extension for Eastern Caribbean itineraries, with its own airport and direct connections from most US cities.
