Discover Greenland with HX Expeditions

The vast frozen tundra of Greenland is alien, surreal and breathtaking — the sort of place you have to see to believe. And you can, with a polar voyage aboard protected departures with HX Expeditions. The world’s largest island is a one-of-a-kind destination; here’s a quick primer on what to expect and look forward to when you step ashore.

Meet the Locals

Home to the Kalaallit for thousands of years, Greenland's coastal communities carry their traditions with pride. In Nuuk and Qaqortoq, HX's long-standing local relationships open doors — you may be welcomed to a kaffemik, an informal gathering over strong coffee and homemade cake, or hear traditional song and see national dress up close. Your Expedition Team is with you throughout, adding the context that turns a warm encounter into real understanding.

The Neighbors Are Pretty Wild

The nonhuman locals are a lively bunch (and a regular must-see for those making the expedition). Before you head ashore, you’ll want to pay a visit to the onboard Science & Education program; there you’ll deep dive the ecosystem. Most wildlife can be found around the country’s ice-free periphery — it’s here that you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for:

  • Musk Oxen
  • Reindeer
  • Arctic Wolves
  • Arctic Hares
  • Arctic Foxes
  • Wolverines
  • Minke Whales
  • Humpback Whales
  • Porpoises and Dolphins
  • An array of birdlife: Skuas, Northern Fulmars, Glaucous Gulls, Lapland Buntings and Snow Buntings

Depending on the excursion you undertake, you may see some of the above from the deck of your ship, on foot ashore or while zipping through the water around the Ilulissat Icefjord aboard an expedition Zodiac or kayak.

AN EXPEDITION, NOT A CRUISE

HX has been taking curious travelers to remote places since 1896. Your Expedition Team — biologists, glaciologists, historians — is with you every day, leading hikes ashore, guiding small boats into fjords the ship can't reach, and paddling kayaks through the waters where the qajaq was invented. Back on board, the Science Center puts microscopes, lectures and live research at your disposal, so what you saw that morning makes more sense by evening. Excursions, meals, drinks and gratuities are all included. Nothing to arrange, nothing to add up — just the day ahead and the people who know how to read it.
