Star Clipper Cruise Expert
Star Flyer under full sail in St Kitts.
We've been on many mega oceanliners , so we decided to try a short three day trip on Star Clipper's Star Flyer, sailing out of St Martin. We are boaters, cruisers though, so a cruise on a true sailboat was an exciting prospect. But we were a bit anxious too.
The Star Flyer was built in 1991 but it is terrific condition. The wood is beautifully maintained. The cabins were a bit small, but that is to be expected on most criuselines, but especially sailboats.
The food quality was very good with plenty of selections. On many cruise lines, the prices of wine, beer and liquor tend to be a bit on the high side. Not true with Star Clipper. Everything was very reasonably priced.
We sailed during the night. I think this is the only negative for me. I personally would have enjoyed the sailing experience during the day. As it was I found that the front/back and side to side motion on the ship interfered with my sleep. This might not be the case for you.
This type of sailing experience is pretty low key, but because of the size of the ships you are able to visit ports not normally accessed by the mainstream cruise lines. On this cruise we departed from St Martin, visiting St Kitts and St Barts. Star Clippers does offer some optional tours but they are limited.
