China and the Yangtze River
Jennifer on The Great Wall of China
China and The Yangtze by Small Ship
Alexander & Roberts Luxury Escorted Vacation
Wow..this was an amazing trip of a lifetime. Our tour started in Beijing China, where we were able to sample the culture of the Chinese people, as well as visit many of the iconic sites in the city. The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the Great Wall just outside of Beijing. While or hotel accommodations were first class, and had real toilets, the public restrooms throughout China are another story.
We visited many the local market, where the locals were selling fish, meats, vegetables and other unidentifiable foods. Around the market area, the streets were lined with vendors selling their goods. You could even by false teeth from a vendor. Yikes! So very interesting.
As part of the experience, we visited the home of a typical family to see how they lived and to experience the culture first hand. Our transportation was by rickshaw, this is a 3 wheeled passenger cart operated by an elderly Chinese man. It was fascinating, as we rode in the open air through all the tiny alleyways in the neighborhoods. Many homes had their laundry hanging everywhere to dry.
Our host family's home was very small and basic, with only 3 rooms, kitchen, living and bedroom only. We all had the opportunity to learn how to make the popular Chinese dumplings, and have a lunch with them. It was fun and interesting. They shared a public bathroom across the alley with all their neighbors Toilets in China are mainly squatting pans that require you to bend your knees or squat over the area. On the positive, they do flush, but you will need to bring your own toilet paper or baby wipes. Unbelievable! This is really all over China, not just Beijing. You just need to be prepared, and a few knee exercises my help a bit too.
The weather was warm, and very overcast due to smog. The buildings and infrastructure appeared ancient and dreary. Every building had thousands of electrical lines going into it looking like a fire hazard.. I found it quite depressing, although the people seemed relatively happy, and unaware of their disadvantages.
Outside of Beijing, the air quality was fine.
After Beijing, we cruised a the small ship, Yangtzi Explorer. It was very lovely, with nice staterooms, and good food, We learned allot about the Three Gorges Dam, tat produces electricity and also increased shipping potential. The scenery along the Yangtze was beautiful .
Followed by the cruise, we flew to Xian to visit the greatest archaeological discovery known as the Terracotta Army, or terracotta soldiers. This is a tomb discovered in 1974 by a farmer digging for water. Within this tomb, are life sized terracotta figures, varying in height, size, uniform and face shapes War chariots and horses were also discovered as part of this buried army. Archaeologist are still at work today, as everything has not been uncovered yet. Visitors are allowed to see close up from a viewing area within or above the archaeology pit.
From Xian, on to Shanghai, a modern and beautiful city, full of life and energy. Our hotel was located in the famous" Bund" area, or waterfront area. The Fairmont Peace Hotel was incredible from both luxurious Art-Deco accommodations to its location on the famous Bund promenade. No evidence of poverty in Shanghai
