Sicily alone has Six Unesco sites and over 15 cities/locations worth of interest and it is surrounded by over 20 little beautiful islands
I am from Rome but Sicily is my very favourite holiday destination, so much so that in the lat 5 years I have been going over 20 times, and still there are plenty of places I am yet to visit.
Often clients ask me if 4/5 days are enough to see Sicily and my answer is usually that that amount of time would suffice for Palermo alone, with a couple of weeks being the minimum amount of tie one needs to visit some of the most important places.
Palermo and its strong multi cultural feel, its charming Teatro Massimo (oldest theatre in Europe, featured in the Godfather movies!), and lovely beach of Mondello
The Basilica of Monreale and Villa Romana with the incredible mosaics.
Agrigento's Valley of Temples, where the 3000 years old Greek civilization seems to have stop there offering the visitor a unique jump in the past.
The charming fishing villages of AciTrezza and AciCastello, my very favourite Sicilian spot, at the pendix of Mt Etna, are not far from Toarmina, the jewel of the Med and Catania, the second biggest city of the island.
I cant forget my last Sicilian vacations, 1 month ago, in the tiny island of Favignana, north of Trapani, spending days in remote, untouched bays and beaches as well as seeing dolphins following our fishing vessel on our hunt for fresh octopus our captain sinagra cooked on the boat for us!
Marzamemi, Noto and Ragusa are less known but not far from Siracusa, and absolutely worth a day trip.
Sicily is not only history, archeology and sea (and its best), but it is also food, wine and an incredible varied mix of flavors, testimonial to the many different civilizations (Romans, Greek, Arabs, Normans) that have stepped into this island and left a mark
