Exploring Southern France by Luxury Hotel Barge

A view of the Canal du Midi in Southern France.
A view of the Canal du Midi in Southern France.

Southern France - the regions of Occitaine, Provence, and the Cote d'Azur - offer the best of French food and wine combined with a lovely Mediterranean climate, fascinating history, and charming local atmosphere.  Luxury cruises by hotel barge along the Canal du Midi offer the best way to discover this lovely region.

I traveled along the historic Canal du Midi during the late spring, when trees where in blossom, fresh asparagus was in season, and the vineyards that dot the landscape were coming out of their winter slumber.  Occitaine is a fantastic destination for food and wine conoisseurs - seafood and spices characterize the region's cuisine, farmers markets abound, and Languedoc-Roussillon wines offer a great value.  Don't miss Narbonne's famous market, a highlight of many hotel barge cruises in the area.

Traveling by hotel barge offers a complete immersion into France.  Barging is an all inclusive experience, with excellent wines, amazing cuisine prepared by your own private chef, and a variety of interesting excursions included in the cost.   Barging is truly a unique and amazing way of travel - once you've tried it, you'll be hooked for life!

On one excursion, our wine tasting and vineyard tour was personally hosted by the owner - a fourth-generation winemaker.  On another excursion, we visited the hillside village of Minerve, deep in Cathar Country.  The history and remoteness of the area were unlike anything I had ever experienced.  We also had the chance to swim in the ocean, bike along the canal, and just relax on deck and savor the atmosphere.

Unique lodging options are plentiful in the South of France.  For example, I stayed at La Tour du Chateau in Occitaine, which not only offers truly luxurious accommodations but also customized wine tasting experiences, cooking classes, and more, offering another way to truly get under the skin of the area.

As a Sud de France certified travel expert, and an expert in French hotel barging, I can help you plan a visit to this region that will provide you with a truly personalized, authentic, and engaging vacation...and memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime.
