Go Slow! Caye Caulker in December
This was a destination unlike any other I have experienced. It was a quick get-a-way for my husband and I and perfect for some time to unplug & relax. The island's motto is Go Slow! and they know how to embody this mindset. Caye Caulker is simply humble with no frills. Unpaved roads, no cars, hostels, small BnB type accommodations, and sand floor restaurants line the streets. With the exception of two realty companies, we found no international franchises on the island. The Belizean dollar is locked in at a rate of $2 BZD to one USD and Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America, so communicating and converting prices were very easy. The people of this area consist of a melting pot of cultures and we found them to be friendly and engaging. The cuisine was unique and fresh with lots of seafood offerings. The snorkeling in the area is some of the best in the world. The Belize Barrier Reef is the largest in the Western Hemisphere with incredible visibility. Eagle rays, sea turtles, moray eels, lobster, nurse sharks and a plethora of other exotic fish filled the waters around us. We loved it so much we booked a second day tour! Although I don't believe this is a destination for everyone, we certainly enjoyed our experience and would consider a second trip.
