Island hopping in Hawaii

Sunset on Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Oahu
Sunset on Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Oahu

The Hawaiian islands were on my list to visit for a long time, and when I finally arrived in Honolulu, I was wondering why I hadn't visited sooner! The island breeze that greeted me at the airport was so refreshing that it put me on "island time" from the moment I arrived.

When I stepped into the Marriott hotel on world-famous Waikiki Beach, I knew I was going to have a blast walking around the area, and of course, dipping into the water! The very first evening i walked all along the main shopping area, then took a break with an amazingly strong Mai Tai cocktail and proceeded to Waikiki Beach for what turned out to be the best sunset I have ever witnessed! I live in Arizona, which has the most amazing sunsets, and yet, I have to admit that that very first evening standing with my feet in the sand of Waikiki Beach, looking at a fiery sky, was just a bit of a magical moment. A moment, I will never forget.

The next day, I walked all the way from the hotel to the top of Diamond Head volcano, which provided me with an expansive view of Honolulu. It is a sight not to be missed when you visit the island of Oahu!

As Hawaii is really 6 destinations, I had also arranged inter-island flights to the island of Kauai and to Maui. While Oahu is a bustling, more commercial island, Kauai is definitely less developed and more natural. While it rained quite a bit when I was in Kauai, I got very lucky during the boat ride that took us along the mysterious Na Pali Coast. Seeing this rugged coast line with my own eyes had been the main reason for my trip all the way to Hawaii. It is simply breathtaking! Our scenic boat ride also served the best Mai Tai cocktails I have ever tasted in my life!

Another noteworthy adventure was a hike in a Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, a winding drive up Waimea Canyon and lunch in Hanalei with a spectacular view on the cascading waterfalls and mysterious fog of the surrounding mountains. What a treat this island was!

From Kauai, I flew to Maui to end my trip in style as I stayed at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa on Ka'anapali Beach. It was the perfect spot to relax, watch more sunsets and indulge in some amazing Hawaiian food. I went to several beaches with the assistance of a local friend, experienced an unforgettable visit to the top of Haleakala volcano National Park, had a relaxing stroll by Oprah Winfrey's house and rode the famous winding road to Hana!...I really miss Hawaii and its beautiful Aloha spirit. It's the kind of place that will forever stay with you even if you left a long time ago.

I think it's time for you to be enchanted by the islands of Hawaii as well :)
