 It's likely the cruise industry got it's start in 1859. The modern concept of cruising was first popularized by British adventurer and sportsman John K. McGregor. He was exposed to the canoes and kayaks of Native Americans on a camping trip in 1859. Upon his return to the United Kingdom he constructed his own version of a two sided canoe. He nicknamed the boat 'Rob Roy' after a relative of his. The canoe was built of oak planking and cedar then covered with rubber canvas.
