Germany is a country where centuries of history, vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes come together in a surprisingly compact area. From medieval villages and fairytale castles to modern cities, mountain scenery and picturesque wine regions, Germany offers an enormous variety of experiences and is a destination that can easily be explored on its own or combined with neighboring European countries.

Berlin, the capital, is one of Europe’s most fascinating cities. Its turbulent history can be explored at the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, remnants of the Berlin Wall and Museum Island, while its neighborhoods offer everything from traditional cafés to art galleries, markets and nightlife.

One of Germany’s less known treasures is Dresden, known for its Baroque architecture and as my birth place a city particularly close to my heart. Sitting along the banks of the River Elbe, Dresden is often called the “Florence on the Elbe” because of its remarkable architecture, art and cultural heritage. Much of the historic center was destroyed during World War II and painstakingly rebuilt, making a walk through the old town even more meaningful.

Dresden is also a wonderful base for exploring Saxony. Just outside the city are vineyards, castles and picturesque towns like Meissen, where the true European porcelain was developed by alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger. Just east of Dresden you can find the dramatic sandstone formations of Saxon Switzerland National Park which provide some of Germany’s best hiking and scenery.

The Bavarian capital Munich in the south of the country has a completely different character, with its Bavarian traditions, beer gardens and famous Oktoberfest, and makes an excellent starting point for exploring the Alps, lakes and castles of southern Germany.

Northern Germany has yet another personality. Hamburg combines maritime history with a modern waterfront and one of Europe's great harbors. Farther north, the Baltic and North Sea coasts offer beaches, islands and seaside resorts. The hanseatic city of Lübeck is known for its beautiful preserved medieval architecture and world-famous sweet almond confection Marzipan.

Beyond its cities, Germany is made for exploring. Drive the Romantic Road through Bavaria, stopping at walled medieval towns such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, or continue south toward Neuschwanstein Castle and the Bavarian Alps. The Black Forest offers hiking trails, traditional villages, waterfalls and scenic drives, while the Rhine and Moselle valleys are lined with vineyards, hilltop castles and small riverside towns. River cruises through these regions offer a wonderfully relaxed way to experience the countryside.

Germany is especially rewarding for travelers interested in history and culture. Magnificent cathedrals, palaces, museums, castles and historic town centers can be found throughout the country. Cologne Cathedral is breathtaking, Heidelberg combines a romantic old town with its famous castle, and smaller communities often provide some of the most memorable experiences.

The country changes with the seasons as well. Spring and summer are ideal for hiking, cycling, river cruises and outdoor cafés. Autumn brings colorful landscapes, wine festivals and harvest celebrations. Winter transforms towns and city squares with some of Europe's most atmospheric Christmas markets, every little town has its own market, bigger cities even several, sometimes differently themed.

Germany works great for many different styles of travel. It can be explored by rental car on a self-drive vacation, by Germany's extensive rail network, on organized or private tours, by bicycle, on hiking trips or as part of a European river cruise. Travelers can build an itinerary around history, castles, food and wine, Christmas markets, family heritage, music and art, or simply take their time discovering small towns and countryside away from the usual tourist routes.

German food is also very regional. Bavarian specialties can be completely different from dishes found in Saxony or along the North Sea. Local bakeries, traditional restaurants, beer halls (nearly every town has their own authentic brewery!), wineries and seasonal markets are all part of the experience. Germany is not just about beer and bratwurst — although enjoying both in a traditional beer garden certainly belongs on the list.

Perhaps one of the best things about Germany is how easy it is to combine completely different experiences in one vacation. You can spend the morning exploring a world-class museum, the afternoon walking through a vineyard or medieval village and the following day hiking in the mountains. Whether you are visiting for the first time, tracing family roots, planning a romantic European getaway or returning to discover a different region, Germany has far more to offer than can be experienced in a single trip.
