Seeing the Northern Lights is a bucket-list trip for many. Many locations worldwide offer this kind of adventure, and it's hard to figure out when and where to go!
Early in my Travel Advisor career, I planned one of these trips. Since it was a large undertaking to a section of Europe I had never seen, my husband and I were the guinea pigs!
We based ourselves in Stockholm for the first 4-5 days, enjoying culture, Nobel Prize history, beautiful architecture, and a cruise out into the city's surrounding fjords. The food was unmatched, and dinner at Ekstedt, a Michelin-star restaurant that cooks only over open flame or in smoke pits, highlighted local Swedish cuisine and elevated it into a once-in-a-lifetime meal.
The planning process included choosing the correct time of year. The Northern Lights are best seen when the nights are long, in places that have little or no artificial light, and it doesn't hurt to have a little luck on your side!
When I send travelers on these kinds of adventures, or even when I go with my family, I take the most pride in the research I do to find THE best location, time, and experiences. It is where my expertise and care really shine.
I chose Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost city in the province of Lapland, about 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, as our northern touchpoint. We then drove ourselves 2 hours north and west to Abisko, where we spent the next 4 days chasing the lights.
Positioned in the middle of the Aurora Oval, we saw increasingly strong Aurora storms each night, culminating in our midnight photography tour, where we watched the lights "dancing" in many colors.
We went dog sledding and snowmobiling, and relaxed at our lodge. We spent time within the Sápmi region, the traditional homeland of the indigenous Sámi people, learning about Reindeer herding and their cultural traditions.
The trip was amazing. My husband and I agree it was one of the best we have ever taken.
I bring my passion to each client adventure and trip I plan, and I make the experience come alive. Whether you want a cruise, to see the Northern Lights, or to relax in Mallorca, my time and dedication stay the same. I want to know who you are and why you are traveling so you get the most wherever and whatever you dream of doing.
