About Me

Washington, DC is a destination where history, culture, politics, architecture, museums and entertainment come together. The nation's capital offers much more than a quick visit to the monuments. From walking the National Mall and exploring world-class museums to discovering Georgetown, enjoying the city's restaurants and experiencing an evening of theater or live entertainment, DC can be tailored to many different interests.

The National Mall and Monuments are at the heart of a visit to Washington, DC. The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial and World War II Memorial each tell part of America's story. Seeing the monuments during the day provides one perspective, while an evening visit can be especially memorable as the monuments are illuminated. Comfortable walking shoes are a must—the Mall covers a lot of ground, but the opportunity to see so many significant landmarks in one area is part of what makes Washington special.

The White House and Capitol Hill offer a closer look at the center of American government. Depending on availability and current requirements, visitors may be able to tour the White House, visit the U.S. Capitol and explore the Library of Congress. The Supreme Court and National Archives are also nearby. The National Archives is home to some of the country's most important founding documents, including the Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

Washington is also a museum lover's destination. The Smithsonian museums offer an extraordinary range of experiences, including the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of American History and National Museum of African American History and Culture. The National Gallery of Art provides another opportunity to experience celebrated works of art, while the National Portrait Gallery offers a different look at American history through the people who shaped it. With so many museums, visitors can return to DC multiple times and still find something new.

Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac River in Virginia, offers a quieter and deeply meaningful experience. The cemetery is the final resting place of more than 400,000 service members, veterans and their families. Visitors can see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and, when scheduled, witness the Changing of the Guard. The experience provides a powerful connection to the people and sacrifices behind American history.

Beyond the monuments and museums, Washington's neighborhoods each have their own personality. Georgetown is known for its historic architecture, cobblestone streets, waterfront, shops and restaurants. Dupont Circle offers restaurants, cafés, nightlife and beautiful residential streets, while Embassy Row provides an opportunity to see many of the diplomatic residences and embassies along Massachusetts Avenue. The Wharf brings a more modern waterfront atmosphere with dining, entertainment and views along the Potomac River.

Food and dining are an important part of the DC experience. The city offers everything from historic and iconic restaurants to contemporary dining, international cuisine, cafés and neighborhood favorites. Dining can easily become part of the sightseeing, whether it is brunch between museum visits, dinner in Georgetown or an evening along the waterfront. DC's diverse population is reflected in its culinary scene, making it possible to experience many different cuisines during one trip.

Washington also offers a strong arts and entertainment scene. Theater, dance, music and cultural performances provide options beyond daytime sightseeing. The Kennedy Center is a major destination for performing arts, while venues throughout the city offer concerts, theater and other performances. Evening entertainment can add another dimension to a trip that might otherwise be focused heavily on history and museums.

One of the best things about Washington, DC is the ability to combine different types of travel in one visit. A day might begin with a historic site, continue through a museum, include lunch or brunch in one of the city's neighborhoods and end with a theater performance or dinner. The city works well for travelers interested in American history and government, but also for families, couples, groups of friends, art lovers, food enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys exploring a city on foot.

Washington, DC is a destination worth taking time to explore. The famous landmarks are only the beginning. Look beyond the monuments and discover historic neighborhoods, remarkable museums, meaningful memorials, diverse dining, performing arts and the many stories that have shaped the nation's capital.

I loved working with Kim Erkman! She created an ideal trip for my daughter and me to the Pacific Northwest. Not only did she make things easier on the planning side, she had lots of tips and ideas for additional activities, depending on the weather. Kim is very friendly & easy-going. It made for a much more relaxing, enjoyable trip working with a professional, instead of trying to do everything myself. I look forward to working with her again!
