New Orleans is a city I keep coming back to because there is always something more to experience. Music, food, history, architecture, celebrations, nightlife and the personality of its neighborhoods all come together to make it unlike anywhere else.
Spring is one of my favorite times to visit. I’ve experienced both the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and Jazz Fest, and I love watching the city come alive as winter fades. There is almost always a parade or celebration happening somewhere in New Orleans or the surrounding communities. St. Patrick’s Day, Mardi Gras, Easter parades and the Krewe of Boo Halloween parade each bring their own traditions, music and energy to the streets. The Second Line bands and crowds celebrating along the parade routes are part of what makes the city so much fun.
Jazz is deeply connected to New Orleans, but the city’s music scene is about so much more. I experienced the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2024, and it was much more than a music festival. There was an incredible variety of performers, from jazz and R&B to rock, pop, country and more. With multiple stages, Louisiana food, art and thousands of people enjoying the day, the festival felt like a celebration of New Orleans itself.
And the music doesn’t stop when the festival ends. Live music can be found throughout the city, from the French Quarter and Frenchmen Street to neighborhood restaurants, clubs and smaller venues. New Orleans has a way of putting music into everyday life, whether you are looking for a night of dancing and entertainment or simply sitting somewhere listening to a local musician.
Food is another reason I keep coming back. Dining in New Orleans is unique, whether it’s enjoying crawfish, turtle soup, traditional Creole dishes or discovering a restaurant with its own take on local favorites. Café du Monde and its famous beignets are a New Orleans tradition that is hard to pass up, but there is so much more to discover throughout the city.
The French Quarter is always worth exploring, both during the day and at night. Jackson Square, the historic streets, balconies, courtyards and architecture all tell part of the city’s story. An architecture tour offers a closer look at the history behind the buildings. Bourbon Street is certainly famous for its nightlife and energy, and walking the street from one end to the other gives you a very different view of the Quarter. Continuing toward the quieter end and reaching Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar is a memorable way to experience another piece of New Orleans history.
The Quarter is only one part of the city. The Garden District offers grand historic homes, beautiful architecture and tree-lined streets, while the Marigny, Bywater and Magazine Street each have their own character. Frenchmen Street is a favorite for live music and a lively evening atmosphere. Riding the streetcar is another great way to see different neighborhoods and experience the city at a slower pace.
History is everywhere in New Orleans, and the National WWII Museum is one of the places that has made the greatest impression on me. I love this museum and find it to be a meaningful experience. Learning about World War II and the people whose lives were changed by it adds an important historical perspective to a visit.
New Orleans also has a complicated history, and learning about Hurricane Katrina provides a better understanding of the city and its surrounding communities. The Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain have also played important roles in shaping the region.
There is even more to experience beyond the city. Plantation tours such as Oak Alley offer a look into Louisiana’s past, while swamp and bayou tours provide a completely different perspective of the area and its wildlife.
What keeps bringing me back is the variety. One visit can be filled with music and food, another with history and architecture, and another with a parade, nightlife, a museum, a swamp adventure or simply wandering through a neighborhood and taking in the atmosphere.
New Orleans is more than the French Quarter, more than Bourbon Street and more than Mardi Gras. It is a city where music spills into the streets, food becomes part of the experience, and celebrations seem to appear around every corner. There is always another neighborhood to explore, another restaurant to try, another story to learn and, very likely, another parade just around the corner.
