I spent a full month exploring Mauritius with a friend of mine and it remains one of the more unique island escapes I've experienced. We rented a private villa in Flic en Flac as our home base and had a car for the entire stay to explore the whole island, which gave me a much fuller picture of what this country actually offers beyond the postcard beaches.
The south of the island won us over completely. Le Morne Public Beach, in particular, is a standout: crystal-clear water, powder-white sand, and the dramatic backdrop of Le Morne Brabant rising directly behind it. We hiked Le Morne Brabant ourselves, and found that it's a surprisingly tough climb, deceptively casual at the base before turning into a steep rock scramble near the summit.
For something more accessible, Le Pouce is a great alternative with far less commitment and still rewarding views. Beyond the hikes, we spent time at Chamarel Waterfall, hiked through Black River Gorges National Park, and saw the Chamarel Seven Colored Earths, one of the island's stranger and more photogenic natural sites.
Catamaran cruises and sunset after sunset from the west coast rounded out what became one of my favorite months of travel.
Where you base yourself matters a lot here, since the island's coasts each have a distinctly different personality. The north, around Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, and Pereybere, is the most convenient option for first-timers: lively, walkable without a car for at least the first stretch, with swim-safe lagoons, good nightlife, and easy access to catamaran tours.
The west coast, where I stayed, centers around Flic en Flac and Tamarin; it's laid-back, sunny, and a great central base for day trips inland to Black River Gorges or south toward Le Morne, with calm, shallow water that's ideal for families.
The south and southwest, anchored by Le Morne and Bel Ombre, is wilder and more dramatic, home to the island's most upscale resorts, its best kitesurfing, and rougher, windier seas; a rental car is essential out here since everything is spread out.
The east coast, around Belle Mare, Palmar, and Trou d'Eau Douce, is the quietest and most exclusive option, known for some of the island's longest white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons, ideal for honeymooners and golfers who want a peaceful, resort-based stay, though it sits farther from island-wide sightseeing and nightlife.
One base I'd steer almost everyone away from is Port Louis. It's a working port city with no real beaches, and while it's worth a stop to explore, I wouldn't recommend it as a home base for a leisure trip.
Mauritius isn't a place where you stumble into great food everywhere you turn; it takes some knowledge of where to look, but the hidden gems are absolutely worth tracking down, and it's exactly the kind of local insight I build into a client's itinerary so they're not left guessing.
The island itself is small enough to drive corner to corner in a day, but renting a car is essential if you actually want to see it, unless your plan is to stay put at a single resort for the whole trip.
Beyond what I did firsthand, Mauritius has plenty more to offer depending on what a client is after: kitesurfing at Le Morne, a tour through Port Louis for culture and markets, and rum tastings, since Mauritius has a genuine rum-producing tradition worth exploring.
Between the beaches, the hiking, and the sheer range of terrain packed onto one island, Mauritius is a destination I'd recommend to almost any traveler looking for something a little different from the typical island getaway, and I'd love to help plan that trip.
