Oregon is one of those places that feels wildly underrated. It has this perfect balance of dramatic natural beauty, charming small towns, and creative cities that make every kind of traveler feel like there’s something here for them. From rugged coastlines and lush forests to wine country, mountain landscapes, and vibrant food scenes, Oregon offers a trip that feels both adventurous and grounding.

What I love most about Oregon is how different each part of the state feels. You can spend one day walking through a city full of bookstores, coffee shops, and incredible restaurants, and the next hiking along cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean or driving through forests that feel almost untouched. It’s the kind of destination that feels both peaceful and full of possibility.

Portland: Creative Energy, Food & Everyday Charm

Portland is where most people start, and it’s a city with a personality all its own. It has this laid-back, creative energy that makes it feel instantly welcoming, full of local coffee shops, independent bookstores, incredible food, and neighborhoods that each have their own vibe. One of my favorite things about Portland is that it doesn’t feel overly polished—it feels lived in, local, and authentic.

You can spend your day exploring places like Powell's City of Books, walking through the Portland Japanese Garden, or grabbing food from one of the many amazing food cart pods the city is known for.Portland is also a great base for day trips.

Within a short drive, you can be wine tasting in the Willamette Valley, hiking in the Columbia River Gorge, or chasing waterfalls like the iconic Multnomah Falls.

Ashland: Arts, Charm & Southern Oregon Beauty

Ashland is one of those smaller towns that completely surprises people. It has a charming, walkable downtown, beautiful mountain surroundings, and a strong arts culture that gives it so much personality.

It’s most well known for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which draws visitors from all over and makes the town feel especially alive. Even if theater isn’t normally your thing, the atmosphere around it is such a big part of the experience and gives Ashland a unique kind of magic. Beyond that, the town itself is beautiful—great restaurants, local shops, nearby hiking, and a slower pace that makes it feel like the perfect reset.

Samuel H. Boardman: Oregon’s Most Dramatic Coastline

If you want one of the most breathtaking coastal drives in the country, Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor is a must.

This stretch of the southern Oregon coast feels wild and untouched, with dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, sea stacks, and forest trails all packed into one incredibly scenic drive. It’s one of those places where you constantly want to pull over because every viewpoint somehow gets better than the last.

What I love most about this area is how raw it feels. It’s not overly developed, it’s just pure coastline, huge ocean views, and that quiet kind of beauty that makes you stop and take it in. Nearby towns like Brookings make a great base for exploring this stretch of coast.

Willamette Valley: Wine Country & Slower Living

For travelers who love wine and slower, more intentional travel, the Willamette Valley is one of Oregon’s best experiences.

Known especially for incredible Pinot Noir, this region offers rolling vineyards, boutique wineries, and a much more relaxed wine country feel compared to places like Napa. It feels approachable, beautiful, and deeply connected to the landscape.

This is where you spend your day wine tasting, enjoying long lunches overlooking the vines, and taking scenic drives through small towns and countryside roads. It’s perfect for couples, romantic weekends, or anyone who loves food and wine without needing the formality of luxury wine destinations.

Bend & Central Oregon: Mountains, Lakes & Outdoor Adventure

For a completely different side of the state, Bend and Central Oregon bring sunshine, mountain views, and endless outdoor adventure.

This area is perfect for hiking, paddleboarding, skiing, and exploring places like Smith Rock State Park or nearby alpine lakes. It has a much drier climate than the rest of the state, giving it a totally different feel from Portland or the coast.

Bend also has a great brewery scene and that same laid-back Oregon energy, making it a fun stop for both adventure and relaxing.

Crater Lake: Oregon’s Most Iconic Natural Wonder

Crater Lake National Park is one of those places that almost doesn’t look real when you see it in person. Known for having some of the deepest and clearest blue water in the world, the lake sits inside the collapsed crater of an ancient volcano, creating one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in Oregon.

Whether you’re driving the scenic rim road, hiking along the surrounding trails, or taking a boat tour out to Wizard Island, the entire experience feels peaceful and awe-inspiring. It’s the kind of place that reminds you how powerful nature can be.

McKenna planned the most incredible month-long trip through Costa Rica for our group of four. She took care of everything from accommodations and transportation to recommending fun, budget-friendly activities that made the trip easy to navigate and took all the stress of travel planning off our plate. The highlights of our trip was renting ATVs from Santa Teresa to Montezuma nearby, guided hiking tours of a volcano, and trying all the amazing food spots she suggested along the way. Everything was well thought out, and we never had to stress about logistics. We couldn’t have done it without her!
