About Me

Waterfall meets Jungle in Ecuador
Waterfall meets Jungle in Ecuador

Ecuador is one of the most underrated destinations I’ve experienced. What makes it so special is the incredible variety it offers within such a small country—you can go from historic cities in the Andes to the Amazon rainforest, cloud forests, and coastal beach towns all in one trip.

When I traveled through Ecuador, I was constantly surprised by how immersive and diverse each destination felt. While the cities offer a great introduction to the culture, it’s the smaller towns, untouched natural beauty, and endless adventure opportunities that truly set this destination apart. The following, are some of my favorite spots and top recommendations for any adventure traveller:

Quito: Culture, History & The Middle of the World

Most journeys begin in Quito, and it’s the perfect introduction to the country. The historic district is one of the best-preserved in South America, filled with colonial architecture, churches, and charming streets that are perfect for exploring. Quito is also an amazing place to dive into the local culture through food. I did a cooking class here, which ended up being one of my favorite experiences, but food tours and walking tours are also great options. One of my top recommendations is doing a bike tour with a guide—it’s such a fun and efficient way to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time.

One of the most unique experiences nearby is visiting Mitad del Mundo, where you can stand on the equator—literally the center of the world.

Otavalo: Markets, Culture & Local Craftsmanship

Otavalo is home to one of the largest open-air markets in South America, and it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. You’ll find everything from handmade textiles and jewelry to art and unique souvenirs, honestly, anything you can think of.What I loved most about Otavalo was how vibrant and authentic it felt. It’s a great place to connect with local culture and bring home a unique and personal souvenir.

One unexpected highlight for me was visiting Parque Cóndor, where they put on a falconry show. It ended up being such a cool and memorable experience and something I wouldn’t have initially planned, but absolutely recommend.

Mindo: Cloud Forest & Eco-Tourism

Mindo is known for its serene, biodiverse cloud forest and is a must-visit for nature lovers. This area feels peaceful, lush, and completely immersive. One of the most unique experiences here is taking a chairlift through the cloud forest, offering incredible views from above the canopy. You can also visit butterfly sanctuaries, hike to waterfalls (with options ranging from easy to more challenging), and spot wildlife like monkeys, toucans, and even sloths.

Mindo is a hub for eco-tourism and is perfect for slowing down and reconnecting with nature.

Baños: Adventure Capital of Ecuador

Baños de Agua Santa is known as the adventure capital of Ecuador, and for good reason. This is where you go if you want a trip filled with adrenaline and unforgettable experiences. While I was there, we went white-water rafting, paragliding, zip-lining, and even tried bungee jumping. One of the most iconic spots is Casa del Árbol, also known as the “Swing at the End of the World.” We also visited Pailón del Diablo, one of the most powerful and impressive waterfalls I’ve seen.

We originally planned to stay just a couple of days in Baños—but ended up staying over a week. There’s just so much to do, and the energy of the town makes it hard to leave.

Amazon & Jungle Experience

For a completely different experience, heading into the Amazon region starting in Tena is absolutely worth it. This part of the trip felt the most raw and immersive. On our Amazon tour, we fished for our own lunch, made homemade chocolate, visited a monkey sanctuary, watched caimans grab food right off sticks, tried traditional blow darts, and even tubed down the river. It was a bit out of the way in our itinerary, but easily one of the most memorable parts of the entire trip, and something I would highly recommend if you want a deeper, more adventurous experience.

Coastal Ecuador: Surf, Nightlife & Wellness

For a coastal escape, Montañita is known for its lively nightlife and social party atmosphere. It’s a fun stop if you’re looking for energy and a more upbeat beach scene.

Just next door, Olon offers a completely different vibe. Much quieter and more relaxed, it’s perfect for unwinding, surfing, and enjoying a slower pace. This area has a strong expat community, which brings a variety of food options, along with things like yoga on the beach, surf lessons, and small wellness retreats. It’s the perfect way to balance out the more adventurous parts of the trip.

Why I Love Planning Ecuador Travel

I love helping clients design Ecuador itineraries that balance adventure with meaningful experiences, whether that’s exploring the Amazon, hiking through cloud forests, diving into local culture, or relaxing on the coast.

McKenna planned the most incredible month-long trip through Costa Rica for our group of four. She took care of everything from accommodations and transportation to recommending fun, budget-friendly activities that made the trip easy to navigate and took all the stress of travel planning off our plate. The highlights of our trip was renting ATVs from Santa Teresa to Montezuma nearby, guided hiking tours of a volcano, and trying all the amazing food spots she suggested along the way. Everything was well thought out, and we never had to stress about logistics. We couldn’t have done it without her!
