About Me

Malta combines Mediterranean charm, rich history, and stunning coastal beauty into one easy-to-explore destination. With its crystal-clear water, historic cities, and laid-back lifestyle, it offers the perfect mix of relaxation, culture, and scenic charm.

When I first went to Malta on a quick trip to visit a friend, I honestly didn’t even know where it was or what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by this tiny island country and just how much history and beauty it has to offer. What I love most about Malta is how compact it is. With a total surface area of only about 122 square miles, you can experience so much in a short amount of time without ever feeling rushed. From exploring centuries-old architecture to swimming in some of the clearest water in Europe, Malta offers a well-rounded and incredibly enjoyable travel experience.

History, Architecture & Culture

Valletta, the capital city, is rich in history and character. With its golden limestone buildings, narrow streets, and harbor views, it feels both grand and intimate at the same time. You could easily spend days exploring Valletta, with stunning architecture, historic landmarks, and beautiful viewpoints around every corner.

While you're there, visit St. John's Co-Cathedral, tour the Grand Master’s Palace, or my top recommendation, take a harbor cruise to see the city from the water. Seeing Valletta from the harbor gives you a completely different perspective and really highlights how impressive the architecture is against the coastline.

Just outside the capital, Mdina and Rabat offer a completely different feel. Known as the “Silent City,” Mdina is quiet, historic, and incredibly atmospheric, with narrow streets and beautiful palazzos that feel frozen in time. Walking through it almost feels like stepping back into another era.

Nearby Rabat adds another layer of local life and history, making this area perfect for slowing down and experiencing a more traditional side of Malta. It’s a great contrast to Valletta and gives you a deeper appreciation for the island’s cultural roots.

Beaches, Cliffs & Hidden Gems

Malta’s coastline is one of its biggest highlights, with some of the clearest, most vibrant water in Europe. The Blue Lagoon on Comino is one of the most famous spots, known for its bright turquoise water and incredible swimming conditions. Nearby, the Blue Grotto offers dramatic sea caves and stunning coastal views.

For something a bit more off the beaten path, St. Peter's Pool is a natural swimming spot with crystal-clear water and rock formations perfect for relaxing or even cliff jumping. Whether you’re exploring by boat, swimming, or simply enjoying the views, Malta’s coastline offers endless opportunities to slow down and soak it all in.

Coastal Energy & Nightlife

For a more lively and modern feel, St. Julian's offers a vibrant coastal atmosphere with great restaurants, nightlife, and beautiful waterfront views. This is one of the best areas to stay if you’re looking to combine relaxation with a more social, energetic vibe.

During the day, you can enjoy seaside cafés, swim spots, and easy access to the water, while the evenings shift into a more lively scene with restaurants, cocktail bars, and nightlife that keeps the area buzzing. It’s a great place to go out, meet people, and experience a more modern side of Malta.

Take a stroll around Spinola Bay, where colorful boats line the harbor and restaurants sit right along the water, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in the area, especially at sunset.

Local Life & Fresh Seafood

One of my favorite experiences in Malta was visiting the traditional fishing village of Marsaxlokk, especially for its famous Sunday fish market. Here, you’ll find colorful fishing boats known as luzzus lining the harbor, creating one of the most picturesque and authentic scenes on the island. Walking through the market, you get a real glimpse into local life, with vendors selling freshly caught seafood, local produce, and handmade goods. This is one of the best places in Malta to enjoy incredibly fresh seafood right by the water.

Many of the waterfront restaurants serve fish caught that same day, making it the perfect spot to sit down for a long, relaxed lunch and fully soak in the atmosphere. From grilled fish and octopus to traditional Maltese dishes, the food here feels simple, fresh, and deeply connected to the local culture.

What I love most about Marsaxlokk is how authentic it feels. It’s definitely less touristy than other parts of the island, giving you a chance to slow down and experience a more local, everyday side of Malta. If you have the time, I always recommend planning your visit around the Sunday market, it adds so much energy and makes the experience even more memorable.

McKenna planned the most incredible month-long trip through Costa Rica for our group of four. She took care of everything from accommodations and transportation to recommending fun, budget-friendly activities that made the trip easy to navigate and took all the stress of travel planning off our plate. The highlights of our trip was renting ATVs from Santa Teresa to Montezuma nearby, guided hiking tours of a volcano, and trying all the amazing food spots she suggested along the way. Everything was well thought out, and we never had to stress about logistics. We couldn’t have done it without her!
