About Me

The Coastal Cliffs in the Algarve Region
The Coastal Cliffs in the Algarve Region

Portugal is one of those destinations that is both rich in history and incredibly easy to experience. What I love most about Portugal is how seamlessly you can explore so much of the country in one trip, thanks to its size, well-connected cities, and relaxed pace of travel. From vibrant coastal cities and charming historic towns to world-class wine regions and dramatic beaches, Portugal offers a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and scenery. Having traveled throughout the country, it’s a destination I always recommend for travelers who want culture, coastlines, and effortless travel  without feeling rushed. Here are my top recommendations for your next visit:

Lisbon & Day Trips: History, Culture & Coastal Beauty

Lisbon is the perfect place to begin your journey. Built across rolling hills and overlooking the water, the city is known for its colorful streets, tiled architecture, historic trams, and incredible viewpoints around every corner. One of my favorite parts of Lisbon is simply wandering around in the artsy neighborhoods, stopping at local cafés, and experiencing the slower, more intentional pace of life.

From Lisbon, there are some unforgettable day trips. Sintra feels like stepping into a fairytale, with its colorful castle tours, lush gardens, and misty hills. It’s definitely one of the most unique places in the country.

For something completely different, Nazaré is known for its dramatic coastline and world-famous waves. Watching the massive swells crash along the cliffs is an experience in itself, offering a raw and powerful contrast to Lisbon’s charm.

Porto & The Douro Valley: Wine, Views & Old-World Charm

Porto offers a completely different energy from Lisbon, to me it felt more intimate, historic, and deeply connected to Portugal’s wine culture. Set along the Douro River, the city is known for its colorful buildings, tiled facades, and incredible riverfront views. This is where you’ll experience Portugal’s famous port wine, with countless cellars offering tastings and tours that highlight the region’s rich history

Just outside the city, the Douro Valley is one of the most breathtaking wine regions in the world. Rolling vineyards stretch along the river, creating a landscape that feels both peaceful and dramatic. Staying in a small town like Pinhão allows you to fully immerse yourself in the region, whether you’re enjoying wine tastings, scenic river cruises, or simply taking in the quiet beauty of the valley. If you're not a huge wine drinker, even just the scenic train ride from Porto, makes this a place worth visiting.

Algarve Coast: Beaches, Cliffs & Relaxation

The Algarve region offers some of the most stunning coastline in Europe, with golden cliffs, turquoise water, and hidden beaches tucked between rock formations. Lagos is one of my favorite spots in the region, offering the perfect mix of natural beauty and relaxed coastal charm. The town felt like the perfect spot to unwind but also had a lively nightlife and quite the collection of restaurants with various cuisines. You can spend your days exploring sea caves, kayaking along the cliffs, or simply relaxing on some of the most picturesque beaches in the country.

The Algarve is ideal for slowing down and enjoying the coastal lifestyle, whether that’s beach hopping, enjoying fresh seafood, or watching the sunset over the ocean.

Coimbra: A Historic Hidden Gem

Coimbra is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most charming and historic cities in Portugal. Home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, it has a unique energy that blends tradition, culture, and a lively student atmosphere.

Walking through Coimbra feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow streets, historic architecture, incredible churches, and viewpoints overlooking the river. It’s a perfect stop to experience a more authentic, less tourist-heavy side of Portugal.

Food, Wine & Local Experiences

One of the highlights of traveling through Portugal is the food and wine. From fresh seafood along the coast to traditional dishes and regional wines, every meal feels like part of the experience.

Some must-try favorites include:

  • Pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tarts)
  • Fresh grilled seafood, especially along the coast
  • Traditional dishes like bacalhau (salt cod)
  • The Francesinha, a massive & iconic sandwich from Porto (bring a big appetite for this one)
  • Local wines like Touriga Nacional (one of Portugal's finest) and of course various port wines in the Douro Valley

Portugal is one of my favorite countries to plan because it offers so much variety in such a manageable way. It’s perfect for travelers who want a balance of culture, relaxation, food, and scenic beauty, all while moving at a pace that feels enjoyable and not rushed. Whether it’s a romantic getaway, a food and wine-focused group trip, or a well-rounded European adventure, Portugal provides so many different types of experiences.

Girls trip to Costa Rica!
Reviewed By ReaganH - Humboldt, California | Traveled to Costa Rica | Central America
McKenna planned the most incredible month-long trip through Costa Rica for our group of four. She took care of everything from accommodations and transportation to recommending fun, budget-friendly activities that made the trip easy to navigate and took all the stress of travel planning off our plate. The highlights of our trip was renting ATVs from Santa Teresa to Montezuma nearby, guided hiking tours of a volcano, and trying all the amazing food spots she suggested along the way. Everything was well thought out, and we never had to stress about logistics. We couldn’t have done it without her!

McKenna helped us plan a two-week trip to New Zealand to visit friends, and it turned into so much more than we expected. We wanted a mix of seeing people and exploring, and she absolutely nailed the balance. She organized our stays in a few different locations and set us up with a camper van, which ended up being one of the best parts of the trip.
