California Poppies overlooking the American River
California is a destination with endless possibilities, from vast wine regions, the choice of sunny beaches or coastal cliffs, to iconic cities and serene nature. California offers something for everyone. As a California native, here are some of the ways I often choose to explore and experience California:
Wine Country
- California’s wine region of Napa Valley is internationally known for its rolling vineyards, Michelin-star dining, and luxury tastings. With over 400 wineries, picturesque landscapes, world-class farm-to-table restaurants, and a vibrant downtown, Napa is a must-visit for any traveler.
- My personal favorite for a more intimate and locally loved alternative, Amador County offers charming tasting rooms, a more approachable price point, and a rich history rooted in California’s Gold Rush era.Think Napa in the 1980s full of charm and character, with fewer crowds and a more personal, welcoming feel.
- Further south, Paso Robles blends rustic charm with elevated experiences. Known for its bold red wines and laid-back luxury, Paso Robles is ideal for travelers looking for wine with a bit more diversity. The region grows incredible Spanish and Italian wine varietals, which thrive in the area’s unique climate, offering a memorable tasting experience.
National Parks
- California is home to some of the most diverse landscapes in the U.S. Yosemite National Park offers granite cliffs, breathtaking waterfalls, and hiking trails for all ages. Whether you want to explore by hiking Half Dome, whitewater rafting in the nearby Merced River, or simply soaking in the peaceful beauty and wildlife throughout the park.
- For something different, Joshua Tree National Park delivers surreal desert landscapes creating a backdrop for both adventure and reflection. You can experience classic desert camping, or for those who prefer to enjoy nature with a few more amenities, there are numerous "glamping" options near the park, offering a perfect balance of comfort and immersion.
- For those drawn to the coast, Redwood National Park invites you to walk among some of the tallest trees on earth. Take it a step further by exploring the redwoods from above on a canopy trail, where suspended bridges allow you to walk through the treetops. Then, take a short drive to the nearby coastline to experience the best of both worlds, quiet forests and rugged ocean views, all in one day!
Coastal Getaways
- California’s coastline stretches for over 800 miles, offering everything from sunny beaches to dramatic cliffs. Southern California destinations like San Diego provide year-round sunshine, beautiful beaches, and a relaxed yet upscale vibe. While in San Diego, visit Pacific Beach for a younger, laid-back atmosphere, or head to La Jolla for a more refined coastal experience.
- My personal go-to is the Santa Barbara area, where a touch of Mediterranean charm with Spanish-style architecture, nearby wineries, blends into coastal elegance. This spot is ideal for relaxing beach days and trying out your surf skills.
- For a more laid-back California feel, the Santa Cruz region blends surf culture with scenic beauty. If you’re traveling with kids, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a must-visit. Nearby, Capitola offers a more elevated feel, with boutiques, waterfront dining, and the iconic colorful beach-lined houses.
- If you prefer dramatic and secluded, the cliffs of Big Sur offer one of the most breathtaking coastal drives. Stop for a meal at Nepenthe, a widely loved cliffside restaurant, with panoramic views of the coastline and the Santa Lucia Mountains. If you stay the night, consider Lucia Lodge, which offers cozy, cottage-style rooms perched above the cliffs, providing an amazing spot to watch the sunset.
City Breaks
- San Francisco is known for its iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, historic cable cars, and Alcatraz Island. However, my favorite part of exploring this city is visiting different districts, each of which has it's own distinct personality. Whether your interest is in Haight-Ashbury for its ties to the historic hippie movement and boho lifestyle, the Mission District for its vibrant art scene, Chinatown for new cuisine and cultural immersion, or Union Square for luxury and boutique shopping, there’s something for everyone.
- San Diego combines city life with coastal views, offering incredible food, nightlife, and outdoor experiences. There is always something to do, You can start the morning at the beach, your afternoon exploring museums or waterfront neighborhoods, and end your night in the city’s lively dining and nightlife scene.
- Sacramento, California’s capital, often called the “City of Trees”, an underrated gem with a growing food scene, rich history, and the perfect blend of city life and nature. Sacramento is known for the craft brewery scene and its title as the “Farm-to-Fork Capital,” due to its incredible access to fresh, locally sourced food. A visit to Old Sacramento Waterfront is a must to experience the charm of its historic district.
