About Me

Roy's Peak Hike at Sunrise
Roy's Peak Hike at Sunrise

New Zealand, otherwise known as Aotearoa, is a land of contrast, adventure, and natural beauty. With landscapes that range from rolling green hills and geothermal wonders to dramatic fjords and alpine mountains, it offers a level of diversity that’s hard to find anywhere else in the world. After spending eight months traveling and living throughout New Zealand, what makes it so special to me is how immersive it feels, you’re not just visiting, you’re truly experiencing it.

The best way to explore New Zealand is by dividing your time between the North Island and the South Island. Each offers something completely different in terms of landscape, local energy, and experiences, and together they create a well-rounded, once-in-a-lifetime journey. Below are some of the spots I believe you must see on your next trip here:

North Island: Culture, Coastlines & Geothermal Wonders

The North Island offers a blend of vibrant cities, rich Maori culture, and unique natural landscapes.

Most travelers begin in Auckland, a coastal city surrounded by water, where you can ease into the country with incredible dining, harbor views, and island day trips. It’s the perfect starting point before heading into more nature-focused experiences.

One of the most unique regions is Rotorua, known for its geothermal activity, bubbling mud pools, and natural hot springs. This is also one of the best places to experience Maori culture through traditional performances, storytelling, and local cuisine offering a deeper understanding of the Indigenous history the country is built on.

For beach lovers, the Coromandel Peninsula offers stunning coastal scenery, including Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own natural hot spring right in the sand.

Further north, the Bay of Islands is known for its crystal-clear waters, sailing, and marine life perfect for a more relaxed, coastal escape.

The North Island has a slightly warmer, more laid-back feel, making it a great place to balance exploration with relaxation while still experiencing New Zealand’s culture and natural beauty.

South Island: Dramatic Landscapes & Adventure

The South Island is where New Zealand’s landscapes become truly dramatic. This is the side of the country known for its mountains, glaciers, fjords, and world-class adventure.

While much of the scenery leans toward rugged alpine landscapes, a must-stop for sunshine and coastal relaxation is Abel Tasman National Park, known for its golden beaches, turquoise water, and abundant wildlife. You can hike along the coast or take a boat to one of the beaches and spend the day exploring at your own pace.

Queenstown is considered the adventure capital of the world, offering everything from bungee jumping and skydiving to jet boating and world-class skiing. Beyond the adrenaline, it’s incredibly scenic set along Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by mountains.

Nearby, Wanaka offers a quieter, more relaxed alternative with the same breathtaking alpine scenery. If you're up for a challenge, a sunrise hike up Roys Peak is one of the most rewarding experiences, offering panoramic views that feel completely surreal.

One of the most iconic experiences in New Zealand is visiting Milford Sound, where towering cliffs, waterfalls, and misty landscapes create an almost cinematic experience. Whether explored by boat, kayak, or scenic flight, it’s truly unforgettable.

For those who love road trips, driving through the Southern Alps, along the West Coast past Franz Josef Glacier, or visiting Aoraki / Mount Cook offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.

The South Island feels more rugged and remote, making it ideal for travelers seeking adventure, dramatic landscapes, and a deep sense of immersion in nature.

Why I Love Planning New Zealand Travel:

After spending extended time exploring and living throughout New Zealand, it’s become one of my favorite places in the world, somewhere that truly feels like a second home. It’s one of the most well-rounded destinations you can experience, offering adventure, culture, relaxation, and natural beauty all in one trip without ever feeling overwhelming. It’s also incredibly easy to navigate, especially for those open to a road trip experience (and willing to learn driving on the left side of the road).

I love helping clients design journeys that flow seamlessly between the North and South Islands, balancing high-energy adventure with slower, more intentional moments. Whether it’s a honeymoon, bucket-list trip, or extended adventure, New Zealand has a way of feeling both expansive and deeply personal.

Girls trip to Costa Rica!
Reviewed By ReaganH - Humboldt, California | Traveled to Costa Rica | Central America
McKenna planned the most incredible month-long trip through Costa Rica for our group of four. She took care of everything from accommodations and transportation to recommending fun, budget-friendly activities that made the trip easy to navigate and took all the stress of travel planning off our plate. The highlights of our trip was renting ATVs from Santa Teresa to Montezuma nearby, guided hiking tours of a volcano, and trying all the amazing food spots she suggested along the way. Everything was well thought out, and we never had to stress about logistics. We couldn’t have done it without her!
