Split, Croatia is perfect for travelers who want to combine active adventure, beautiful nature, and authentic Mediterranean culture. Located along the sparkling Adriatic Sea, Split offers the rare opportunity to spend your morning exploring ancient Roman history, your afternoon hiking, kayaking, or swimming, and your evening enjoying fresh seafood and local wine.
At the heart of Split is Diocletian's Palace, one of the most remarkable Roman monuments in Europe. Built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian, the palace has become part of the living city rather than simply a historical site. Restaurants, cafés, shops, and homes occupy spaces within and around the ancient walls. I love wandering through the palace's narrow stone streets and discovering how seamlessly modern Croatian life exists alongside nearly 2,000 years of history.
For active travelers, Split is an outstanding base for exploring the Dalmatian coast. The surrounding mountains and islands provide endless opportunities for adventure. One of my favorite recommendations is Marjan Hill, the forested peninsula just outside the historic center. Hiking or biking through Marjan offers beautiful views over Split, the Adriatic, and the nearby islands without having to travel far from the city.
The water is just as inviting. Kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, snorkeling, and swimming are all wonderful ways to experience the Adriatic. For travelers looking for a little more adventure, canyoning on the Cetina River near Omiš is an unforgettable experience, combining hiking, swimming, waterfalls, rock formations, and adrenaline in one spectacular setting.
And then there are the islands.
Split is an excellent jumping-off point for exploring some of Croatia's most beautiful islands. Hvar is famous for its scenery, historic stone streets, beaches, and lively atmosphere. Brac is home to the spectacular Zlatni Rat beach and wonderful opportunities for hiking, swimming, and water sports. Vis offers a more secluded and authentic island experience, with beautiful coves, vineyards, and a slower pace.
For nature lovers, I also recommend exploring Krka National Park, where waterfalls, rivers, forests, and walking trails create a beautiful escape from the city. The dramatic scenery makes it an excellent day trip for travelers who want to experience more of Croatia's natural beauty.
Culture and food are equally important here. Split's history reflects Greek, Roman, Venetian, and Croatian influences, and you can see those layers throughout the city. I encourage my clients to explore the local markets, try fresh Adriatic seafood, sample traditional Dalmatian dishes, and leave plenty of time to sit along the waterfront with a coffee or glass of Croatian wine.Split is also an increasingly popular cruise port, but I always encourage cruise travelers to look beyond the immediate waterfront. The real character of Split comes from wandering through the old city, hiking above it, getting out onto the water, and exploring the surrounding coastline.
For travelers who want their vacation to include movement, discovery, history, nature, and incredible scenery, Split offers an unforgettable taste of the Croatian coast.
