Hello, my name is Faizon Shakeel. From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to the idea of exploring the world. The allure of new destinations, cultures, and experiences fascinated me. I could spend hours reading about far-off places, imagining the tastes, sights, and sounds that awaited there. But for a long time, travel was only a hobby, a dream. I never imagined it could be a career—until I discovered the world of professional travel planning.Becoming a travel agent was the perfect blend of my interests: helping people, organizing experiences, and exploring the world vicariously through others. What began as curiosity quickly grew into passion, and that passion became the foundation of my career.Starting as a travel agent wasn’t instantaneous. It required dedication, learning, and a willingness to immerse myself in the nuances of the travel industry. I began by enrolling in a comprehensive travel agent training program. The course covered everything I needed to know—from global booking systems and supplier networks to customer service excellence and marketing strategies. The first thing I realized was that being a travel agent is much more than booking flights and hotels. It’s about understanding people’s desires and turning them into seamless, unforgettable experiences. My training emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with suppliers like airlines, cruise lines, and hotels. It also highlighted the power of technology, showing me how tools like GDS (Global Distribution Systems) platforms, travel CRM software, and booking portals could streamline operations and maximize client satisfaction. It also highlighted the power of technology, showing me how tools like GDS (Global Distribution Systems) platforms, travel CRM software, and booking portals could streamline operations and maximize client satisfaction. Like any career, starting out had its challenges. I had to learn to navigate the vast network of travel suppliers, understand the fine print of contracts, and adapt to ever-changing client expectations. Some clients wanted highly customized trips, while others sought last-minute bookings with strict deadlines. Every situation demanded creativity, patience, and problem-solving.One of my early experiences that shaped me involved coordinating a family vacation to Europe. The client had specific requests: a mix of historical tours, luxury accommodations, and a series of culinary experiences. It was my first major test as a travel agent. I had to carefully research and book flights, accommodations, and activities across multiple countries while managing different time zones. When the family returned and shared how much they loved every detail, I realized the profound impact a travel agent can have on people’s lives. Being a travel agent isn’t a 9-to-5 job. My days vary widely depending on client needs, upcoming trips, and industry trends. Some mornings begin with checking emails from clients traveling overseas, while other days involve deep research to design unique itineraries. A large portion of my time is spent coordinating logistics: confirming flights, arranging transfers, booking excursions, and ensuring that every detail aligns perfectly.I also dedicate time to professional development. The travel industry evolves constantly. New destinations, regulations, and trends emerge, and staying informed ensures I provide the best guidance to my clients. Whether it’s attending webinars, reading industry publications, or networking with other professionals, continuous learning is a cornerstone of my work ethic. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my career is designing experiences, not just vacations. A luxury honeymoon, a milestone birthday celebration, or a once-in-a-lifetime adventure requires thoughtful planning. I immerse myself in my clients’ goals, then craft trips that exceed expectations. For example, I arranged a private sunset sail in Santorini for a honeymooning couple, paired with a private dinner atop a cliffside villa. Another client, an adventure seeker, wanted an off-the-beaten-path trek through Patagonia. I connected them with local guides, arranged unique accommodations, and created a seamless itinerary that balanced adventure with comfort.
