Micronesia, Tropical Island ParadiseThe Federated States of Micronesia is heaven on earth. I shall share some memories. I was there for five weeks. We flew into Hawaii and stayed overnight. Then we flew to Ponape Micronesia. There was one stop to refuel. I am sharing this, so you know what to expect. The place we stopped was a military base. We were told not to. Did I say not to. Do not leave the plane. I looked out the window. I say a man sitting on what looked like a jeep pointing a huge ugly looking gun at the plane. We got to Ponape. The trip was well worth the nerve-racking experience. We were greeted with a traditional festival. It began with a traditional woman’s choir wearing traditional attire. Warning, the traditional attire is that the older women were topless. Then we proceeded into a building. There were four big flat rocks on top of stones that were like legs of the table of flat rock. The men began the process of the traditional light sedative drink called sakau.  It is made with the roots of the kava kava plant. The skin of the root is taken off. Then it is chopped into small pieces. Here is where the fun part starts. The root is then banged with rocks in rhythm. Then a group of women dressed in what reminded me of Tahitian dancers came out into the middle of the floor. They danced to the rhythm of the beating rocks.The entire experience was soothing. When traveling, you will find people do and eat different things. We then circled this huge bed of rocks that were heated by a fine underneath. A live pig was brought out. They slaughtered the pig. I caution you, there was a lot of blood. I have more respect for animals. They skinned the pig and took the entrails out like they prepared a fish. They put the whole big on the bed of rocks. Remember, people do and eat different things around the world. On each side of the pig was placed two dead dogs. The pig and two dogs were roasted on the rocks. We then had dinner. I ate this ground meat.  I did not know what it was. I do not know if it was dog or not.A must in Micronesia is to go snorkeling. The water is very clear. We saw many colorful fish. I saw a solid blue starfish. We took a motorized boat ride to another island from Ponape. I looked at the stern, back, of the boat. Then I saw in the distance a huge whale’s tail. Keep in mind this was a motorboat like bass boat flopping in the waves. I then had an experience I have never had prior or after this event. I literally became speechless because I became so excited that I saw a huge whale’s tail. I turned to the person next to me and tried to tell her, “There is a whale’s tale over there.” No words came out. I could not talk. I just nudged her and pointed. Unfortunately, the rest is history. There was no whale’s tale anymore. When we got to the other island we did more snorkeling. We also climbed this huge hill. At the top of the hill was a waterfall. It was about twenty feet down to a pool of water. We jumped in the pool of water. (Don’t try this without a guide who knows the depth of the pool.)If you are planning to go to a tropical island, choose Micronesia. Choose Michael Behm to be your travel agent.
