About Me

Lisbon Portugal
Lisbon Portugal

I spent ten unforgettable days in Lisbon, staying in the atmospheric old town where every street, stairway, and tiled façade brimmed with character and history. Based in the historic center, I wandered winding alleys that revealed neighborhood emblems tucked into shopfronts, secret plazas, and artisan studios; each quarter offered its own distinct personality as I moved from Alfama’s hillside lanes to Baixa’s grand squares, Chiado’s elegant cafés, and the lively bars of Bairro Alto. The city’s compact scale and layered architecture made it easy to explore on foot: hidden viewpoints, neighborhood markets, and historic churches appeared between leisurely meals, and every corner felt like a new discovery.

One cinematic highlight was a sunset cruise on the Tagus River. We drifted beneath a striking two-level steel bridge cars on one tier and trains on the other whose silhouette echoes the Golden Gate yet carries its own industrial grace. Floating under the span, the soft rumble of traffic overhead blended with the evening breeze as we sipped cocktails and watched the sun melt toward the horizon; it was a peaceful, maritime moment that captured Lisbon’s coastal spirit. Another unforgettable afternoon was climbing to a Moorish castle for sweeping panoramas: from the ramparts the city unfurled in tiers of red roofs, terracotta chimneys, and the river’s glittering ribbon, offering a perfect orientation to plan which neighborhoods to explore next.

For a different perspective we took a tuk-tuk ride through narrow streets back to the center; the quick guided loop introduced local anecdotes, tilework details, and hidden stairways that made familiar lanes feel newly intimate. Riding the Santa Justa Lift was another small thrill the ornate ironwork and elevated views over Baixa, Rossio, and the Tagus River felt timeless and postcard perfect.

Food shaped almost every day of the trip. Fresh seafood became a nightly must clams in garlic and white wine, simply prepared whole fish, and one unforgettable evening when I splurged on a blue lobster that still stands out among the trip’s best meals showcasing Portugal’s Atlantic bounty. We also discovered a ten-euro bottle of red wine one night whose depth and balance set a new benchmark for value and pleasure. Mornings often began at neighborhood cafés with a bica (espresso) and a chouriço sandwich, always paired with a warm pastel de nata. I took a hands-on Portuguese cooking class and learned several savory recipes bacalhau variations, simple stews, and seasonal vegetable preparations but mastering pastel de nata, the flaky, caramelized custard tart, was the sweetest souvenir and an essential Lisbon recommendation.

We rented a car for a day and drove east to Évora, a city that felt like a living museum. Walking among the ancient Roman pillars of the Temple of Diana, exploring a historic library with marble staircases, and spotting medieval castles and hilltop fortresses along the route gave a vivid taste of Portugal’s layered past beyond the capital. The drive revealed rolling plains, cork oak groves, and small villages each stop making the landscape feel richer and the history more tangible. Évora’s compact center, with its whitewashed streets and classical ruins, rewarded slow wandering and paired beautifully with a leisurely regional lunch.

A day trip to Sintra and the Pena Palace provided a fairy-tale contrast: vivid palaces perched on misty hills, verdant gardens, and winding lanes to explore. We wandered Sintra’s center, visited Quinta da Regaleira’s enigmatic gardens, and took a horse-drawn carriage through the town romantic touches and restorative felt after urban days in Lisbon. These excursions Sintra’s palaces and Évora’s ruins balanced the city’s lively energy with quiet, historic escapes that are easy to slot into a ten day itinerary.Ten days in Lisbon allowed a relaxed, generous pace: enough time to ride iconic trams up steep hills, linger at miradouros (viewpoints) watching the Tagus glow at dusk, and savor long meals without rushing.

Practical takeaways from my stay: pack comfortable shoes for steep, cobbled streets and frequent stairways; book popular attractions, the Santa Justa Lift viewing slots, and sunset cruises in advance to secure preferred times; rent a car for at least one day if you want to reach Évora or other inland towns; carry a refillable water bottle for long walks and wear layers for coastal breezes and variable hilltop winds. Allow time for spontaneous café stops, neighborhood discoveries, and the pastry at dawn, a glass of wine at sunset that make Lisbon feel lived in.

Lisbon lingers in memory for its azulejos and tiled façades, tram bells clattering up hills, the river’s changing light, the unforgettable blue lobster, and the simple joy of a perfect pastel de nata on a sunlit terrace.
