About Me

San Sebastian, Spain
San Sebastian, Spain

I spent two unforgettable weeks in San Sebastián (Donostia), Spain, and found a compact, cozy coastal city that feels curated for slow exploration, delicious discoveries, and everyday moments that become memories. From the moment I arrived I loved how everything was within easy walking distance: five-star restaurants and humble pintxo bars sat a short stroll from golden sands, surf breaks, and historic streets, making it effortless to switch from seaside relaxation to culinary adventures without ever needing a car.

Mornings often began with a gentle walk along La Concha’s crescent bay, the light catching on the water as locals and visitors alike strolled the promenade. The beach’s sheltered curve and soft sand made it a perfect place for slow starts reading, people-watching, and planning the day. Later in the day I would wander toward Zurriola Beach to watch surfers ride the Atlantic swell; the Zurriola stretch has a younger, more energetic vibe and felt like the place to witness San Sebastián’s active side. One of the most peaceful daily rituals was standing on the promenade with an ice-cold Estrella in hand, watching surfers carve the waves while the sky warmed toward evening a small ceremony that summed up the city’s easy rhythm.

Monte Igueldo was a highlight that stitched nostalgia into the trip. The funicular ride up the hill, the vintage amusement-park rides, and the panoramic lookout transported me back to childhood summers while offering arguably the best vantage point over the bay and the city’s rooftops. The hill’s old-world charm is genuinely cinematic: not contrived, but quietly preserved, and perfect for slow, contemplative afternoons.

Food is central to San Sebastián’s personality, and during my two weeks I made eating and tasting a form of local education. Pintxos hopping in the Old Town (Parte Vieja) became nearly daily practice ducking into narrow bars, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with locals, and letting chefs serve small masterpieces that pack intense flavor into bite-sized plates. La Cuchara de San Telmo stood out for seafood and inventive pintxos; the focused menu and perfectly executed dishes turned many evenings into culinary celebrations. The sensory experience of tasting briny, fresh seafood in a bustling bar felt both communal and deeply local.

No culinary ritual felt as essential as the daily slice of Basque cheesecake at La Viña. It became a soft obsession: the caramelized, crackly top giving way to a luxuriously creamy, almost custardy center. I’d stop in regularly—sometimes after a beach walk, sometimes as an afternoon treat—because the cheesecake captured the city’s ability to make small pleasures feel monumental. Alongside the cheesecake, sampling local cheeses, charcuterie, and seasonal seafood revealed the Basque Country’s devotion to quality ingredients and straightforward cooking that accentuates natural flavors.

Two weeks in San Sebastián is the perfect length to move at the city’s pace: long enough to alternate lazy beach days with immersive culinary evenings and cultural outings, but short enough to leave you wanting to return. I balanced relaxed mornings on the sand with long lunches and evening pintxo crawls, and sprinkled in museum visits to places like the San Telmo Museoa to ground the trip in Basque history and art. The city’s compactness meant I spent more time exploring and less time in transit; comfortable shoes became my most important packing item because nearly everything worth seeing beaches, museums, markets, and top restaurants is easily walkable.

Practical tips I learned: reserve ahead for high-end restaurants and popular tasting menus, arrive early at pintxo bars for the best spots and freshest plates, and embrace standing at the bar for the most authentic experience. If you want an elevated view with fewer crowds, visit Monte Igueldo early or late in the day; for the most cinematic sunsets, position yourself along La Concha promenade or on a terrace with a view of the bay. Try local beers like Estrella on the promenade, sample sidra (Basque cider) at a traditional sagardotegi if you can, and order seafood that’s in season it will likely be some of the freshest you’ve ever tasted.

San Sebastián’s charm rests in its balance: cosmopolitan enough to attract world-class chefs and food scholars, yet intimate and walkable enough to feel like a small town where rituals form quickly and become dear. The city rewards curiosity, take your time wandering the Parte Vieja’s alleys, pause for a slice of La Viña’s tarta de queso, stand shoulder-to-shoulder at La Cuchara de San Telmo for briny pintxos, and climb Monte Igueldo for a view that grounds the whole experience. Over 14 days I found that San Sebastián is more than a destination; it’s a rhythm you settle into, a daily combination of sea, flavor, and light that stays with you long after you leave.
