About Me

Hot air ballon adventure over Teotihucan,Mexico.
Hot air ballon adventure over Teotihucan,Mexico.

I'm Rick, founder of Travelers Roam, and I design journeys for people who want more from travel than a checklist of landmarks. My focus is archaeological, cultural, and regenerative travel. That means trips built around ancient civilizations, living traditions, and experiences that give back to the communities and landscapes you visit. I specialize in small group and private tours across Mesoamerica, the Middle East, Egypt, the Mediterranean, South America, Polynesia, and Southeast Asia.

What draws me to this work is a deep curiosity about how ancient cultures shaped the world we live in today. I've spent years studying and exploring archaeological sites across multiple continents, not as a casual tourist, but as someone who genuinely wants to understand what happened at these places and why it still matters. That knowledge shapes every itinerary I build.

I work with carefully vetted tour operators known for expert local guides, responsible practices, and a pace that lets you actually absorb what you're experiencing. No megabus tourism. No surface-level photo stops. My trips are designed for travelers who want real access, thoughtful context, and moments that stick with you long after you get home.

I also care deeply about how travel impacts the places it touches. Regenerative travel is central to what I do. That means selecting locally owned accommodations, community-led experiences, and conservation-minded partners so your trip actively strengthens the destination rather than just passing through it.

Whether you're standing inside a pyramid in Egypt, exploring Maya temples in the Yucatan jungle, walking the ruins of Petra, or sharing a meal with a family in Oaxaca, my goal is the same: to create a journey that informs, challenges, and changes you.

If you're a curious traveler looking for depth over convenience, let's talk. I'd love to help you plan something meaningful.

Who I Work With:

My ideal clients are intellectually curious travelers who:

  • Are fascinated by ancient civilizations, archaeology, and history
  • Want to understand the why and how behind monumental sites, not just photograph them
  • Appreciate comfort, quality, and thoughtful pacing
  • Care about local culture, sustainability, and regenerative tourism
  • Prefer small group experiences or custom-designed journeys over mass tourism

If you’ve ever stood at an archaeological site wondering how an ancient society organized its cities, fed its people, or aligned architecture with the stars, we’ll get along just fine.

My Areas of Focus:

  • Ancient Civilizations & Archaeology

Mayan, Aztec, Inca, Egyptian, Greco-Roman, and ancient Asian cultures, among others.

  • Cultural Immersion

Local cuisine, cooking classes, markets, artisans, traditions, and regional storytelling.

  • Regenerative & Responsible Travel

Carefully selected hotels, lodges, and resorts that support local communities and environments.

  • Elevated Small Group Tours:

12-24 passenger, Well-paced itineraries, knowledgeable guides, and high-quality transportation

How I Plan Your Journey

Trust is built through process, not promises. Here’s how I approach every trip:

  • Discovery First

I start by understanding your interests, curiosity level, travel style, comfort preferences, and expectations.

  • Supplier & Guide Vetting

I work only with reputable tour operators, local experts, and accommodations known for quality, safety, and depth of knowledge.

  • Thoughtful Itinerary Design

Each journey balances education, exploration, rest, and cultural connection.

  • Concierge-Level Support

From flights and logistics to on-the-ground details, I manage the moving parts so you can stay focused on the experience.

You’ll always know what kind of experience you’re signing up for, and why it was selected.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to be an archaeology expert to join these trips?

Not at all. These journeys are designed for curious travelers at every level, from lifelong enthusiasts to those newly discovering their interest.

Are these trips physically demanding?

Activity levels vary by destination, but I clearly communicate expectations in advance and prioritize reasonable pacing and comfort.

Do you only offer group tours?

I specialize in small group journeys but also design custom itineraries for individuals, couples, and private groups. I also offer Pre and Post options for those wishing to extend their trip.

A Little More About Me

When I’m not planning journeys, you’ll usually find me reading about newly uncovered archaeological sites, researching regenerative resorts and hotels, traveling with my family, riding my gravel bike, or playing a round of disc golf. Curiosity doesn’t shut off just because I’m home.

Upe Nai Mayan Cooking Class

Experiential Travel to Central America

I stood next to a Mayan temple in the heat of the day…nothing prepared me for that moment. The jungle was breathing, Birds I couldn't name were calling from somewhere above. And there I was…standing at the base of a structure built over a thousand years ago, watching the mist lift off the canopy. This is what travel is su...
