About Me

The Washington Monument
The Washington Monument

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States and the center of its federal government. More than just a seat of power, it is a city filled with history, monuments, culture, and diversity. Nestled along the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia, Washington, D.C. embodies both the ideals and complexities of the American experience. It is where democracy is debated, history is made, and millions of visitors come each year to see the nation’s story carved in marble and stone.  Washington, D.C. occupies an area of approximately 68 square miles. The city was carved from land originally belonging to Maryland and Virginia, though the Virginia portion (including Arlington and Alexandria) was returned to the state in 1846. Today, the city is bordered entirely by Maryland on three sides and the Potomac River on the fourth. The design of the city is the product of Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French engineer who envisioned wide boulevards, ceremonial spaces, and grand avenues radiating from the U.S. Capitol. His plan gives D.C. its distinctive grid intersected by diagonal streets named after the states. This design creates many of the iconic circles and squares—like Dupont Circleand Logan Circle—that define the city’s character. The National Mall, stretching from the Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial, is the symbolic heart of the city. It’s lined with museums, monuments, and memorials honoring America’s leaders, soldiers, and struggles for freedom.  After the American Revolution, Congress sought a neutral site for the nation’s capital—separate from the influence of any state. In 1790, the Residence Act, championed by Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, authorized President George Washington to select the location along the Potomac River. The city was named for him, and the district for Christopher Columbus, reflecting the era’s admiration for exploration and founding ideals.Construction began soon after, and Washington, D.C. officially became the capital in 1800 when the federal government moved from Philadelphia. Early growth was slow, as much of the area remained rural and undeveloped. During the War of 1812, British troops invaded and set fire to several government buildings—including the White House and Capitol—a defining moment that tested the young nation’s resilience.  By the mid-19th century, Washington had become both a symbol and a target. During the Civil War (1861–1865), the city served as the Union’s political and military command center. It swelled with soldiers, freed slaves, and workers. President Abraham Lincoln led the country from the White House, delivering speeches that would define American ideals, including the Emancipation Proclamation. After the war, Washington’s population continued to grow. The construction of grand federal buildings, such as the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution, reflected the city’s growing national importance. The Capitol dome, completed in 1866, became one of the most recognizable symbols of democracy in the world.  The 20th century transformed Washington, D.C. into a modern metropolis. The New Deal of the 1930s expanded the federal government, bringing thousands of new employees and stimulating local growth. During World War II, the city became a hub of military planning and production oversight, leading to the construction of the Pentagon across the river in Arlington, Virginia. The postwar era brought both prosperity and struggle. The city became a focal point for the Civil Rights Movement—most famously, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. That moment cemented D.C.’s role as a stage for social and political activism.  Washington, D.C. is unique in that it is not a state but a federal district under the jurisdiction of Congress. Its residents gained the right to vote for president in 1961 through the 23rd Amendment, but they still lack full congressional representation—having only a non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives. This has fueled an ongoing debate over D.C. statehood, with supporters arguing for “Taxation Without Representation” to end. The movement has gained momentum in recent decades, especially as the city’s population surpasses 700,000—larger than that of some states.  As the seat of the federal government, Washington’s economy revolves around public administration, law, defense, and international diplomacy. It is home to countless federal agencies, embassies, nonprofits, think tanks, and media organizations. Beyond government work, D.C. has a growing technology and education sector, with major universities like Georgetown University, George Washington University, and Howard University contributing to innovation and research.

    My Travel Stories

    Washington D.C. Through my eyes

The train from New York pulled into Union Station just as the sky started to turn pink over the Capitol dome. I stepped out with my backpack and a half-finished cup of coffee, breathing in the early morning air that smelled faintly of rain and roasted beans. It was my first time in Washington, D.C., and I felt that little spark of excitement tha...
