About Me

The Lone Star State
The Lone Star State

Texas, known as the “Lone Star State,” is the second-largest state in both area and population in the United States, surpassed only by Alaska in size and California in population. Spanning nearly 268,600 square miles, Texas boasts a landscape as vast and varied as its history—from coastal plains and pine forests to deserts, rolling hills, and towering mountains. Its identity is deeply rooted in independence, pride, and diversity, reflected in its famous motto: “Friendship.”  Located in the south-central region of the U.S., Texas shares borders with Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Mexico, along with a coastline along the Gulf of Mexico. The state’s immense size gives rise to diverse climates and ecosystems.East Texas features humid forests and swamps, part of the Piney Woods region.Central Texas, including cities like Austin and Waco, offers rolling hills and grasslands known as the Hill Country.West Texas is dry and rugged, with desert landscapes and mountain ranges like the Davis and Guadalupe Mountains.South Texas transitions into subtropical conditions, with palm trees, cacti, and proximity to the Mexican border.The climate ranges from humid subtropical in the east to arid desert in the west. Texas is also known for its extreme weather: scorching summers, flash floods, tornados, and occasional hurricanes near the Gulf Coast.  Long before European settlers arrived, Texas was home to numerous Indigenous tribes, including the Caddo, Comanche, Apache, Karankawa, and Tonkawa peoples. These groups thrived in the region’s diverse environments through farming, hunting, and trading.Spanish explorers, led by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, first arrived in the 16th century. By the 18th century, Spain established missions and presidios across the region to spread Christianity and secure its territory. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Texas became part of Mexican territory, but tensions soon arose between Mexican authorities and the growing number of Anglo-American settlers.  The desire for self-governance led to the Texas Revolution in 1835. The most famous battle occurred at the Alamo in 1836, where a small group of Texans, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, were defeated after a 13-day siege by Mexican forces under General Santa Anna.Soon after, Texan forces led by Sam Houston achieved victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, capturing Santa Anna and securing independence. Texas became the Republic of Texas in 1836—a sovereign nation for nearly a decade with its own flag, president, and currency.  In 1845, Texas joined the United States as the 28th state, an act that contributed to the outbreak of the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). The war’s outcome established the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico.During the Civil War, Texas seceded from the Union in 1861 and joined the Confederate States of America. After the Confederacy’s defeat, Texas underwent Reconstruction and rejoined the Union in 1870.  For much of the 19th century, Texas’s economy revolved around ranching and agriculture, particularly cotton and cattle. The legendary Texas Longhorn became a symbol of the cowboy era, with cattle drives to northern markets shaping the state’s frontier heritage.A dramatic turning point came in 1901, when the Spindletop oil field near Beaumont struck petroleum, sparking the Texas Oil Boom. This discovery transformed the state into a global energy powerhouse and laid the foundation for major oil companies such as ExxonMobil and Texaco.In the 20th century, Texas diversified economically and culturally. The development of aerospace, technology, manufacturing, and education sectors brought prosperity. Today, Texas is home to major cities like:

  • Houston, the energy and medical capital of the world;
  • Dallas–Fort Worth, a hub for business, technology, and culture;Austin, known for innovation, tech startups, and music;
  • San Antonio, rich in Hispanic heritage and history.

Texas boasts one of the largest economies in the world—comparable to entire nations. Its key industries include:Energy: Leading the nation in oil, natural gas, and wind power production.Technology:

  • Austin’s “Silicon Hills” rival Silicon Valley in tech innovation.Agriculture: A top producer of cattle, cotton, and grains.
  • Aerospace and defense: NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston remains a cornerstone of space exploration.
  • Trade: The state’s long border with Mexico makes it a key player in international commerce, especially under the USMCA trade agreement.Low taxes and a business-friendly climate continue to attract corporations and newcomers from across the country.

With a population exceeding 30 million, Texas is one of the fastest-growing states in America. It’s also one of the most diverse, with large Hispanic, African American, and Asian communities contributing to a vibrant cultural mosaic. English and Spanish are widely spoken, and the blending of cultures is evident in food, art, and architecture.
