My 7 day Royal Caribbean Alaskan cruise began as a carefully planned trip filled with expectations of glaciers, scenic ports, and unforgettable “wow” moments. However, it quickly evolved into something deeper a journey about flexibility, connection, and embracing the unexpected. To start the trip stress free, I arrive in Vancouver a day early proved to be one of the best decisions. This allowed me time to explore highlights like the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Vancouver Harbour, and Stanley Park, while enjoying local cuisine and settling into a relaxed mindset before embarkation. Boarding Ovation of the Seas brought excitement and anticipation. Sailing out of Vancouver, watching the skyline fade into the distance, and experiencing onboard entertainment organized by our BDM set the tone for the adventure ahead. Each Alaskan port offered something unique.
In Ketchikan, the colorful waterfront and Creek Street provided charm, while enjoying the famous Great Alaska Lumberjack Show.
Sitka stood out for its blend of Russian and Indigenous history, with visits to St. Michael’s Cathedral and Sitka National Historical Park. learning about Tlingit culture at the Totem Heritage Center added meaning.
Skagway brought history to life through its Gold Rush atmosphere, with the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad offering breathtaking mountain views.
The biggest challenge came when the itinerary changed due to port construction, forcing the ship to skip Seward and the glacier experience, one of the most anticipated highlights. Although disappointing, this moment became a turning point. Choosing to embrace the experience instead of focusing on what was missed allowed the journey to take on a new perspective. With more time onboard, the cruise became a chance to slow down and enjoy the ship itself. Peaceful mornings, great food, entertainment, and scenic views created unexpected moments of relaxation. Most importantly, traveling solo proved to be far from lonely. It opened the door to meeting new people, sharing conversations, and forming meaningful connections along the way.
Instead of Seward, the trip concluded in Whittier, offering a unique experience, including traveling through the Anton Anderson Tunnel and driving along the stunning Seward Highway. A visit to a wildlife conservation center, with close up views of bears and moose, added another memorable highlight.
The final stop in downtown Anchorage provided time to reflect, explore the city, and enjoy one last taste of Alaska before heading home to Toronto. The journey back, with connecting flights, allowed for reflection on everything the trip had offered. In the end, this cruise proved that travel isn’t about perfect plans, it’s about being open to change, finding joy in the moment, and creating memories even when things don’t go as expected.
What started as a planned itinerary became a meaningful reminder that sometimes the unexpected moments turn into the most unforgettable experiences.
