For years, I was the routine keeper, the household manager, the chef, the taxi, the scheduler, and all the rest. I truly loved the rhythm of running a busy home, but the summer my oldest graduated from elementary school, I learned a profound truth sometimes you need to break the routine to truly appreciate it.

What started as a spontaneous mother-daughter graduation trip quickly became one of our most cherished memories and inspiration for years to come.

My first trip was a perfect example, a meticulously planned night away to Stratford. It wasn't about escaping, it was about connecting. We drove almost three hours, explored the town, got dressed up for dinner at our new favorite spot, Elizabeth, and then off to my daughter's first real theater experience to see Rent at Stratfest. The talent radiated from that stage...we were in awe!

We stayed in a place with a fascinating history, where Thomas Edison once lived! We made other unforgettable stops, including the locally owned Ashbourne Cafe, where we devoured their delicious avocado toast and memorable sea salt chocolate chip cookies, now we always buy extra to bring home. We ate late night mozzarella sticks walking downtown, shopped at the cool little stores, wandered the Shakespearean Gardens and shared uncontrollable laughter until midnight.

The following year, it was my youngest daughter's turn to graduate. She loves adventure, so I booked an Alpaca Sleepover at Haute Goat in Port Hope. We slept in a cozy cabin in the alpaca enclosure, where we could spend as much time as we wanted hanging with the alpcas and Shaun the Sheep. In the morning, we joined the farm team and help feed the baby goats! What an experience that was countless goats jumping up to say hello. We had a fantastic lunch at The Schnitzel Shack and explored the area, visiting the interesting Primitive Designs a massive 8,000 square foot space filled with exotic, handcrafted treasures curated from Mexico, Indonesia, and Thailand. Its hard not to get lost in there!

These trips were so special that now we are looking ahead to the next big graduations, high school, those adventures may take us a little further from home. As for post secondary graduation the girls are already planning a family trip to Coachella. The best part of it all, my teenagers are happily planning to spend time with their mom and dad well into their 20's. What more can a parent ask for?
