Belize ~ Paradise Off the Beaten Path

The island of Ambergris Caye (pronounced am-BER-griss key) in Belize is my absolute favorite beach destination. One big reason is that it’s truly off the beaten path. You won’t find high rise hotels for miles. You’ll find small, easy to navigate ocean view resorts, and wonderful people. Belize is for those who truly love to explore and like to be immersed in the culture of the destination they visit.

Getting to Ambergris Caye involves flying into Belize City and then either transferring to a ferry or taking a small plane to San Pedro before your ground transfer to your resort hotel. The primary transportation on the island is golf carts. Which gives travelers the flexibility to check out the island and all of its fantastic dining options. And of course, I will be there to help you take care of all of those details including restaurant recommendations.

The island is part of a coral reef, so you won’t find white sand beaches here. Your resort hotel will offer wonderful pool areas. And if you’d like to do some ocean swimming, then I recommend taking your golf cart to Secret Beach where you’ll find multiple rustic beach clubs that offer chairs, drink, and food service. Water shoes are recommended to save your feet from the rock and coral. But once you get into the water you’ll find soft sand and warm turquoise waters to bathe in. Be sure to bring some snorkeling equipment with you so you can watch for fish and look for seashells.

I also recommend taking a day-long snorkeling and sailing trip onboard a catamaran from Ambergris Caye to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. There you can swim with multitudes of fish, nurse sharks, and even sea turtles. The boat will also take you over to Caye Caulker where you can explore the restaurants and do a little shopping.

The food in Belize is fantastic! If you want to be there for lobster season, you’ll want to travel in the late summer, the autumn, or early winter.
