Egypt: More Than Just Mummies

Walk Like an Egyptian (and Maybe Ride a Camel)

Egypt is one of those places that stays with you forever. It isn’t just about the monuments or the history, though those are incredible, it’s about the way the country makes you feel as you travel through it. I remember the first time I stood in front of the Great Pyramids of Giza, craning my neck to take it all in, and thinking to myself, “these can’t possibly be real.” But they were, and so were the tombs in the Valley of the Kings where the walls are still alive with color thousands of years later. Traveling up and down the Nile was like resetting my own time-line, connecting each temple and tomb to everything I had ever learned in school, but this time seeing it right in front of me instead of in a book.

Some of my favorite memories are the smaller, quieter moments. Sailing slowly down the Nile on a traditional boat with the breeze on my face and kids waving from the banks, or wandering through the markets in Cairo where the smell of spices (and dust!) hung in the air and shopkeepers pulled me in with smiles and laughter. I still remember holding a cup of turkish coffee while weaving my way through stalls filled with lanterns, scarves, and handmade treasures, the noise and the colors and the chaos all wrapping together in a way that felt so alive.

Egypt also gave me some of my most memorable adventures. I went diving in the Red Sea off the Sinai, and it was like entering another world; coral gardens blooming with color, fish darting past in every direction, and then the chance to do a liveaboard trip to the Thistlegorm, a shipwreck full of history where trucks, motorcycles, and supplies still rest as if time stopped. Hiking Mount Sinai at sunrise was another moment that changed me. We climbed in the dark, flashlights bobbing on the trail, and when we reached the top the whole world turned gold as the sun spilled over the desert. I’ll never forget the silence up there, the feeling that I was standing in a place that had shaped so much human history. And then there was the desert itself, vast and endless, where the night sky blazed with more stars than I had ever seen.

For families, Egypt is magic. Imagine standing together in front of the pyramids, or watching your kids’ faces light up as they see hieroglyphs for the first time, or laughing together while snorkeling over coral reefs in the Red Sea. Couples will find their own kind of wonder, whether it’s sharing wine after a long day exploring, sitting hand in hand as the sun sets over the desert, or simply getting lost together in the winding streets of a Cairo market. What I love most about Egypt is that it offers both adventure and intimacy. One day you’re crawling into an ancient tomb, the next you’re floating lazily down the Nile with nothing on your mind except the moment you’re in.

Egypt isn’t just about checking sights off a list. It’s about the way time slows down, the way wonder pulls you together, and the way memories stick to your heart long after you’ve gone home. When I think back on my trips there, I don’t just remember the pyramids or the temples, I remember who I was with, the conversations we had, and how small and connected I felt standing in a place so old and so full of life. That’s the Egypt I want to share with others, the one that changes you, that brings you closer to the people you’re traveling with, and that leaves you with stories you’ll treasure forever.
