Not All Journeys Are Created Equal. Some Change You.
When my wife and I first traveled to Kenya, it was for something meaningful. She was launching an engineering competition for Kenyan students, and I had the honor of serving as a judge at the inaugural event. We began our trip in Nakuru, working alongside passionate students and teachers, surrounded by bright minds and bigger dreams.
From the moment we arrived, Kenya kept revealing itself. Sometimes beautifully. Sometimes unpredictably.
The Road That Taught Me to Look Ahead
Before we left Nakuru for Nairobi, I saw something troubling. National news reports showed a massive traffic jam, with truck convoys frozen on the main highway for miles. It was the kind of gridlock that could turn a two-hour drive into an overnight ordeal.
Fortunately, we were traveling in a small group with the flexibility to adapt. We weren’t in a bus or tethered to a rigid group itinerary. We had a trusted local driver in a small passenger van. As the highway collapsed into chaos, our driver navigated the improvised paths being used by locals with four-wheel instincts and steady nerves.
What could have felt like a crisis became something else entirely. It became an adventure. We reached Nairobi in a few extra hours instead of losing a full day.
That drive made one thing clear: the best travel experiences are built on agility, experience, and trust. Small group travel is not just more personal. It is more resilient.
Then the Mara Spoke
From there, we flew into the wild.
Over three days in the Maasai Mara, the land unfolded slowly. Hippos fought in the river. Warthogs clashed tusks. We sat beside an elephant and her two calves. We followed a jackal and a cheetah across the grasslands. We sat among a massive pride of lions. We watched hyenas test the edges of a buffalo herd. We spotted rhino, pygmy mongoose, and more birds than I could count.
But we hadn’t seen the leopard.
On our final morning, as we headed toward the airstrip, our guide’s phone pinged with a quiet alert. A leopard had been spotted. Our guide, calm and confident, didn’t chase the sighting. He anticipated its path. We got ahead of it and waited.
A dik-dik stood still in a dense patch of brush. The leopard appeared. It crouched. Then it leapt.
The chase failed. The prey vanished. And in that imperfection, something deeper emerged.
It was thrilling. And tender. A reminder that the wild moves at its own pace.
That safari taught me to slow down. To observe more deeply. To find wonder in the unexpected.
The Transfer That Changed Everything
But Kenya wasn’t done teaching me.
After our safari, we landed back at Nairobi-Wilson regional airport. That was when I discovered a gap I hadn’t anticipated. There was no pre-arranged transfer. Our travel advisor hadn’t booked it. We were tired, carrying thousands of dollars in borrowed photography gear, and suddenly on our own.
I ordered an Uber. There was no air conditioning. We sat in traffic with the windows down, trying to stay cool.
Then it happened.
People in the car next to us began motioning. Urgently. I paused to understand. Then I realized they were warning us to roll the windows up. For our safety.
It was a jolt. I reassured my wife, calmly reached across to raise the window, and shifted into high alert. I scanned motorbikes, pedestrians, exit routes, even our driver. I wasn’t afraid. But I was alert in a way I hadn’t expected to be.
That moment reshaped everything. Travel done well is not just about where you go. It is about what you never have to question.
