CruisesAbout Me
In September 2023, we set out on another unforgettable journey, this time to the breathtaking wilderness of Alaska aboard Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas. Departing from Seattle, this cruise brought us face-to-face with glaciers, wildlife, and the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Sailing from Seattle on Ovation of the Seas
Before we even reached our first port, Ovation of the Seas impressed us all over again. The ship combines high-tech innovation with comfort and entertainment. From North Star, the glass capsule that lifts you high above the ship for panoramic views, to the iFly skydiving simulator, bumper cars, and exceptional restaurants, there was always something to enjoy. With a cozy balcony stateroom, we spent plenty of time sipping coffee while watching the landscape change as we sailed north toward Alask.
First Stop: Juneau, Alaska
Our first port was Juneau, Alaska’s capital and a gateway to some of the state’s most iconic sights. We visited a local salmon hatchery, where we learned about the salmon life cycle and the critical role hatcheries play in the local ecosystem. From there, we made our way to the awe-inspiring Mendenhall Glacier. Seeing the glacier up close, with its icy blue hues and towering presence, was a humbling experience. We wrapped up the day exploring downtown Juneau, browsing local shops, and soaking in the crisp Alaskan air.
Next Port: Skagway and the Yukon Route Railway
Our next adventure took us to Skagway, a charming gold rush-era town surrounded by dramatic mountains. The highlight here was riding the historic train up into the Yukon, a scenic route filled with rugged terrain, towering peaks, and stunning views around every bend. We crossed into Canada briefly as the train climbed higher, and it felt like stepping back in time. After the ride, we strolled through town and indulged in a sweet local treat, a warm, sugary Klondike doughboy that hit the spot.
Third Stop: Sitka, Alaska
In Sitka, we spent the day taking in the town’s natural beauty and deep cultural roots. We started with a peaceful walk into town, admiring the gorgeous coastal views and colorful buildings. We visited the Alaska Raptor Center, where we saw rescued eagles and learned about their conservation efforts. Then we wandered through Sitka National Historical Park, where massive totem poles stand tall among old-growth forest trails. Before heading back to the ship, we had to try a freshly caught fish sandwich, and it did not disappoint. It was crispy, flavorful, and the perfect way to cap off a day in Sitka.
Final Stop: Victoria, British Columbia
Our final port before returning to Seattle was the picturesque city of Victoria, British Columbia. The architecture was absolutely stunning, with historic buildings, grand hotels, and flower-filled gardens at every turn. We visited the Malahat SkyWalk, an incredible spiral tower that led us above the treetops with sweeping views of the coastline and distant mountains. It was peaceful, scenic, and gave us a whole new perspective on Vancouver Island’s natural beauty.
We tasted poutine for the first time, and it was every bit as delicious as people say. Warm fries, rich gravy, and perfectly melted cheese curds made for the ultimate comfort food. As the sun began to set, we took a rickshaw ride around the city, which turned out to be one of the most peaceful and romantic ways to explore. The soft light, the coastal breeze, and the vibrant flowers made for a magical end to the day.
Final Thoughts
This Alaskan cruise was everything we hoped it would be. Wild, scenic, peaceful, and full of adventure. From glaciers to gold rush towns, eagles to epic train rides, every stop offered something unique. Ovation of the Seas once again proved to be the perfect home base, offering luxury, excitement, and comfort as we explored the wonders of the Pacific Northwest.
We will always remember this trip for the landscapes, the wildlife, and the once-in-a-lifetime experiences we shared along the way. Alaska truly is the last frontier, and we are so glad we got to explore it together.
