Rome is one of those cities that instantly pulls you in with its history, food, architecture, and energy. Around every corner, you will find something beautiful, from ancient ruins and grand churches to charming neighborhoods, rooftop views, and unforgettable meals.
I have explored Rome on multiple occasions and stayed at three great hotels: Each offers a different experience depending on your travel style and budget.
W Rome is located in the stylish Ludovisi neighborhood, just off Via Veneto and close to the Spanish Steps, Villa Borghese, shopping, dining. It is a beautiful option for travelers looking for an upscale and modern stay.
Hotel Universo is in Rome’s convenient Termini neighborhood, close to the main train station, metro, restaurants, and several major sights. It is a more budget friendly option while still offering an easy home base for exploring.
Mercure Rome Colosseum Centre is ideal if you want to stay near one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. Located just down the street from the Colosseum, the hotel offers easy access to major attractions. A highlight is the rooftop pool, bar, and restaurant, where you can enjoy dramatic sunset views over the Colosseum.
Day 1: Santa Maria Maggiore, Monti and the Colosseum
Start your first day at Santa Maria Maggiore, one of Rome’s most important and beautiful churches. This stunning basilica is known for its gold coffered ceiling, intricate mosaics, and peaceful atmosphere. It is also much less crowded than many Vatican sites.
Afterward, head into the charming Monti neighborhood. Stroll along Via dei Serpenti and Via del Boschetto, where you will find small boutiques, vintage shops, artisan goods, and unique souvenirs.
From Monti, walk toward the Colosseum. Arriving near sunset is a perfect way to end the day, as the golden light makes for incredible photos.
Day 2: Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon and Pasta Making
Start early with an espresso and pastry from a local café, then head to the Trevi Fountain before the crowds arrive. Seeing it early gives you a better chance to enjoy the fountain and take photos before the area becomes busy.
From the Trevi Fountain, to the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna. This lively area is perfect for people watching, shopping, and taking in the atmosphere of Rome. Walk to the top of the steps for wonderful city views.
Next, make your way toward the Pantheon while wandering through Via dei Condotti and Via del Corso, two great streets for shopping. This is a wonderful area to look for Italian leather goods, unique finds, and small artisan boutiques.
The Pantheon is absolutely stunning and a must see in Rome. The line can get long, so visit earlier in the day when possible. Afterward, stop for lunch at Ristorante da Fortunato al Pantheon. The food was delicious, and the staff was incredibly welcoming.
After a short hotel rest, head to a small group Pasta and Tiramisu cooking class at Coquinaria Restaurant near Vatican City. It was one of the highlights of the trip. We made fettuccine, ravioli, and tiramisu from scratch while enjoying local wine, limoncello, and great company.
End the evening at one of the many rooftop bars in Rome. Mercure Rome Colosseum offers breathtaking sunset views of the Colosseum.
Day 3: Vatican City, Castel Sant’Angelo and Trastevere
Start your day in Vatican City with a small group skip the line tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. Book the first morning tour if possible. It usually takes three to four hours and is absolutely worth it.
A knowledgeable guide makes the experience easier and more meaningful. They help lead you through each location, share the history, and keep the group moving without long waits.
After your tour, walk to Castel Sant’Angelo. The bridge leading to the castle is one of the most beautiful in Rome, lined with angel statues created by Bernini’s workshop. It is also a wonderful photo spot looking back toward St. Peter’s Basilica.
Later, head to Trastevere, one of Rome’s most charming neighborhoods. It is known for cobblestone streets, ivy covered buildings, lively piazzas, local restaurants, wine bars, and a relaxed atmosphere. It is perfect for dinner at a traditional Roman trattoria.
Day 4: Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
Start with a guided skip the line tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Book the first morning tour before the day gets too hot and crowded.
Exploring these ancient sites on your own can feel overwhelming. A guided tour brings all three landmarks together with expert commentary about gladiator games, imperial politics, and daily life in ancient Rome.
After your tour, continue exploring. Stop by the Arch of Constantine, then walk toward Piazza Venezia.
Rome is filled with unforgettable history, incredible food, charming neighborhoods, and once in a lifetime experiences. Four days gives you the perfect taste of why Rome is always worth visiting.
