As more people experience mobility changes, whether from aging, surgeries, or unexpected life shifts, travel agencies are sending their agents to online certification courses. These seminars teach agents what equipment exists on paper or which resorts claim to have step-free access.

While certifications are great, reading a manual about accessibility is fundamentally different from living it! Following a series of major surgeries and amputations in 2022, I began relying on a mobility scooter. Having been an avid traveler and an experienced cruiser, on my own two feet, entering the world with a scooter changed everything.

My turning point came during my very first post-surgery cruise in the summer of 2022. I found myself facing unexpected daily friction, like standing in front of an elevator bank of six lifts, pushing the call button, hearing a ding behind me, and trying to turn my scooter around in a crowd, only to watch the doors slide shut before I could navigate across the hallway.That trip was an eye-opener. It wasn't just about whether a ship had elevators; it was about the nuanced reality of navigating crowded spaces, timing, and infrastructure.

In the spring of 2024, I founded my travel agency because I realized travelers with mobility needs don't just need a reservation, they need someone who has lived the experience.

No online course can teach an agent the real-world wisdom of mobility access:

• Ground Transportation Realities: Generic agents often book transfers assuming vehicles are accessible. But outside of strictly enforced regulations, many transfer vans in popular global destinations are not equipped for scooters. I vet transfer companies directly so you never end up stranded at an airport.
• Infrastructure Hacks: During a trip to New Orleans, I encountered the historic French Quarter's high steps, originally built for flood mitigation. While many venues offer makeshift ramps that are unstable or unsafe for heavy scooters, my lived experience taught me to look for flat, accessible service entrances on the side or rear of the building.
• Seamless Logistics: From navigating airline rules regarding battery-powered devices to arranging at-destination medical equipment rentals and managing special dietary requests, I handle the invisible details that make or break a trip.
