The final British colony in the South Pacific is Pitcairn Island. Pitcairn is well-known for being the island where the Mutineers of the Bounty marooned after putting Captain Bligh on the water and fled from the British.
There are currently just about 50 people living on Pitcairn Island, the majority of whom are decedents of the late 1700s mutineers.
At Pitcairn, very few people have the chance to set foot on land. Larger cruise ships will make a distant stop and invite the residents to board to discuss life on the tiny rock in the Pacific, but only small freighter ships are permitted to bring passengers ashore.
Pitcairn Island is a fascinating place to visit. I took a luxurious 250-passenger freighter from Tahiti to this island, where I was able to spend a portion of two days. Although a smaller 12-passenger freight ship is also available, this one was unquestionably more comfortable.
Only a few of the amazing locations on the island are St. Paul's Pool, the bounty cannon, and a view point. The admirable individuals who follow in the footsteps of their ancestors and call this isolated location home are, however, far more fascinating. For those who enjoy stargazing, Pitcairn is a once-in-a-lifetime destination and an official dark sky sanctuary.
