About Me

The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China

China’s two greatest metropolises, Beijing and Shanghai, represent the dual soul of a nation that is simultaneously anchored in deep imperial history and racing toward a futuristic horizon. While Beijing is the stately, cultural heart of the country—a city of ancient walls, grand palaces, and solemn rituals—Shanghai is its glitzy, cosmopolitan sibling, a financial powerhouse defined by soaring glass towers and a chic, international flair.+1To explore both is to witness the full spectrum of the Chinese experience. Beijing: The Imperial Heart, Beijing serves as the ultimate repository of Chinese history. As the capital for over 800 years through the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, the city is laid out on a rigid, symbolic grid that reflects the cosmic order of the emperors. The Forbidden City and the Central AxisAt the very center of Beijing lies the Forbidden City (the Palace Museum). This 178-acre complex was the secluded home of 24 emperors. Walking through the massive Meridian Gate, you enter a world of yellow-tiled roofs (the color of royalty) and vermillion walls. In 2026, the Beijing Central Axis—the 4.8-mile line of imperial buildings that includes the Forbidden City—was recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. A new sightseeing bus now makes it easier than ever to trace this line from the Bell and Drum Towers in the north, through the palace, and down to the Temple of Heaven. The Temple of Heaven remains one of the city's most evocative sites; its Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a masterpiece of wooden joinery, built without a single nail. The Great Wall: Beyond the crowds no visit to Beijing is complete without standing atop the Great Wall. The Badaling section is the most famous (and crowded). Mutianyu offers a well-preserved experience with a fun twist: after hiking the ancient stone battlements, you can take a toboggan slide down the mountain. For a more rugged, atmospheric experience, the sunset tours at Jinshanling provide a hauntingly beautiful view of the "Stone Dragon" snaking over the distant ridges. The Hutongs: A Vanishing Way of LifeTo find the soul of Beijing, you must leave the wide boulevards and enter the Hutongs—narrow, grey-brick alleyways that date back centuries. Areas like Nanluoguxiang and the streets around Houhai Lake are vibrant hubs where traditional courtyard houses (Siheyuan) have been converted into boutique cafes, craft breweries, and art galleries. Exploring these by rickshaw or on foot offers a glimpse into "Old Beijing," where locals still gather to play mahjong or practice calligraphy on the pavement with water brushes.  Shanghai: The Futuristic GatewayIf Beijing is the face of China’s past, Shanghai is the vision of its future. Built on the banks of the Huangpu River, it is a city of energy, fashion, and architectural bravado. The Bund vs. Lujiazui: A Tale of Two BanksThe iconic image of Shanghai is the contrast across the Huangpu River. On the Puxi side (the west bank) lies The Bund, a waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings in Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles. These grand edifices were the "Wall Street of the East" in the 1920s. Directly across the water is Lujiazui, the financial district in Pudong. Here, the skyline is dominated by the Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China. In 2026, its "Top of Shanghai" observatory remains a must-visit, offering a dizzying view from the 118th floor. The nearby Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with its distinct pink spheres, remains a beloved symbol of the city’s 1990s boom. Yu Garden and the Old City despite its modern gloss, Shanghai preserves its roots in the Yu Garden. This classical Ming Dynasty garden is a labyrinth of rockeries, koi ponds, and ornate pavilions. Surrounding the garden is the Yuyuan Bazaar, a bustling marketplace where the architecture mimics ancient styles. It is the perfect place to sample Shanghai’s most famous export: Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). Watching the chefs meticulously fold the pleats in these delicate dumplings is a culinary performance in itself.

I've been lucky enough to visit the Great Wall of China twice, and on my second trip, I even made a cell phone call to the  U.S. from its ancient expanse – a truly memorable moment!  Shanghai holds a special place in my heart as my favorite city.  It perfectly blends a modern, New York City-like atmosphere with the elegant preservation of its rich, old-world Chinese heritage. Then there's Beijing, a city steeped in history, home to iconic landmarks such as the expansive Tiananmen Square, the majestic Forbidden City, and the solemn tomb of Mao Tse Tung, where Communist guards stand silently.  And, of course, the food in China is an adventure in itself. From universally loved dumplings and Dim Sum to an incredible variety of traditional and unique regional cuisines, every meal is an experience to savor.
