About Me

For those living in the southern & hot U.S. dreaming of vibrant autumn scenery, a mid-October cruise from Boston to Montreal offers a breathtaking journey through nature's fall masterpiece. I recently embarked on such a voyage aboard Regent's Mariner, exploring the maritime charm of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland, before being captivated by the distinct European flair of Quebec and Montreal. In Quebec and Montreal, you'll feel as though you've stepped into France, with their enchanting atmosphere, delectable cuisine, and French-speaking locals. If you appreciate the refined experience of upscale, smaller ship cruising, Regent is an exceptional choice. Their commitment to outstanding service, gourmet dining, and luxurious accommodations truly sets them apart.

Eastern Canada offers a remarkable blend of proximity and breathtaking beauty, particularly in the eastern provinces. While often explored via cruise ship, this region is also incredibly accessible by car, offering a scenic and welcoming road trip experience. From historic landmarks to natural wonders, here are a few highlights of Eastern Canada:Historic Halifax & Newfoundland. As a central hub, Halifax is deeply connected to maritime history. It houses a significant collection of Titanic memorabilia and a dedicated cemetery where many victims of the disaster are laid to rest.Gander: Located in Newfoundland, this town is famous for the extraordinary kindness of its residents, who famously opened their homes to thousands of diverted air passengers during the events of September 11th.Iconic Landmarks & Natural WondersCape Breton Island: This island is home to a truly unique sight - the world’s largest fiddle, which stands an impressive 60 feet tall. The Bay of Fundy: Situated between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, this bay is a must-see for its extreme tidal shifts. It features the highest tides in the world, with water levels rising and falling by nearly 52 feet. Beyond the landmarks, the true charm of Eastern Canada lies in its welcoming and friendly people. Whether you arrive by sea or by land, the hospitality of the locals ensures a memorable and enjoyable stay.

The Canadian Rockies are a masterclass in natural drama, and nowhere is this more evident than in the corridor between Banff and Lake Louise. This stretch of Alberta offers a sophisticated blend of rugged exploration and high-mountain luxury, where the air is crisp, the water is an impossible shade of turquoise, and the scale of the peaks makes everything else feel delightfully small. The Charm of Banff TownBanff serves as the vibrant heart of the national park. The townsite is framed perfectly by Cascade Mountain, creating a skyline that looks more like a film set than a municipality. For a panoramic introduction, the Banff Gondola whisks you to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. From the boardwalk, you can trace the ribbon of the Bow River below.  After descending, a visit to the Cave and Basin National Historic Site provides a look into the origins of Canada’s national parks, while the Banff Upper Hot Springs offers a chance to "take the waters" as travelers have for over a century. For those who prefer a quiet afternoon, a stroll through the Cascade of Time Garden offers a peaceful retreat filled with stone bridges and tiered floral displays.  The Majesty of Lake LouiseA short, scenic drive northwest leads to the iconic Lake Louise. Often called the "Jewel of the Rockies," the lake is famous for its vibrant glacial silt that reflects light in brilliant shades of emerald and teal. Dominating the shoreline is the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, an elegant base for independent adventures.  To truly appreciate the scenery, consider these experiences:Canoeing: Gliding across the still water toward the Victoria Glacier offers a perspective that crowds on the shore simply can't match.Hiking: The trail to the Lake Agnes Teahouse is a rewarding ascent through old-growth forest, ending at a rustic wooden cabin serving loose-leaf tea and fresh scones.  Moraine Lake: Just a short shuttle ride away, this neighboring lake sits in the Valley of the Ten Peaks and is arguably even more striking, especially during the soft golden light of sunrise.   The Icefields ParkwayNo visit is complete without venturing onto the Icefields Parkway. This legendary stretch of highway connects Lake Louise to Jasper and is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Key stops include Bow Lake and Peyto Lake, where the viewpoint at Bow Summit offers a look at a basin so blue it looks painted. For the ultimate adventure, the Columbia Icefield allows you to step onto the Athabasca Glacier, a frozen landscape that feels like another world entirely
